Hurricanes fall in PG Showdown opener

Thursday night, the Cartersville Hurricanes lost their opening game at the Hoover, Alabama, Perfect Game High School Showdown, falling to the Fairhope (AL) Pirates 4-1.


Fairhope scored two runs in the top of the second inning and went ahead 3-0 on Rock Gearhart’s solo home run in the top of the fifth. The Canes pushed across a run in the bottom of the fifth by coaxing two walks followed by a two-out RBI single by Brayden Logan.


The Pirates added an insurance run in the top of the seventh and improved their season record to 4-2.


The Hurricanes had their opportunities but were 1-for-12, with runners in scoring positions.


Logan finished with two hits for the Canes, including one RBI. Julez Pratt, Cole Crawford, and Andrew Purdy (double) had the other Cartersville hits.


Avery Shiflett (2 IP, 2ER, 2H, 2BB, 4K) made the pitching start for the Canes and was tagged with the loss. Logan Shrewsbury (2 IP, 0R, 2BB, 5K), Maddox Frazier (2 IP, 1ER, 2H, 1BB, 2K), and Nolan Elrod (1 IP, 1R, 0ER, 0H, 1BB) pitched in relief.


Cartersville (3-3) plays Brandon (MS) at 3 p.m. (CST) and Etowah (AL) at 6 p.m. (CST) on Friday at Spain Park in consolation games. The Canes will play Mountain Brook (AL) on Saturday at 2 p.m. (CST) at Mountain Brook High School.
