GHC softball splits two conference doubleheaders


Georgia Highlands softball opened conference play in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association Saturday and Sunday splitting a pair of doubleheaders with Abraham Baldwin and South Georgia State.


Saturday, the Chargers defeated the ABAC Fillies 9-8 in the first game, but lost the second game of the doubleheader 5-1.


Madison Dennis had five hits in the two games at ABAC including a pair of home runs and a double. She also scored four runs and drove in five. Bradey Tharp had three hits including a double and scored one run.


Maggie Schandera (3 IP, 2R, 1ER, 4H, 3BB) picked up the pitching win in the first game in relief. Haley Robinson (6 IP, 5R, 2ER, 9H, 1BB) was the losing pitcher for GHC in the second game. Gracee Ellis (3 IP, 5ER, 6H, 2BB, 1K) and Katie Traynor (1 IP, 1ER, 1H, 2BB) also pitched in Saturday’s doubleheader.


Sunday at South Georgia State, the Lady Chargers lost 13-5 in the opener but came back to take the second game, 9-1.


Haley Overton finished the day with five hits inclduing a double. She scored a pair of runs and drove in one. Hailey Cronic followed with four hits including two doubles with two runs scored and two RBIs. Audrey Johnson and Malone Aldridge added three hits each for GHC.


Robinson (7 IP, 1ER, 5H, 1BB, 5K) tossed a complete game to win Game 2 on Sunday. Schandera (0.0 IP, 5R, 1ER, 2H, 1BB) was tagged with the loss in Sunday’s opener. Ellis (5.2 IP, 8R, 5ER, 10H, 1BB) pitched in relief.


Georgia Highlands (9-21, 2-2) hosts Andrew College Tuesday and East Georgia State Friday in conference doubleheaders.
