Colonels snap skid with decisive win over McEachern
March 1, 2025

After dropping three straight, the Cass boys’ soccer team bounced back Friday night with a decisive 6-1 home victory over McEachern at Cochran Stadium.
The breakthrough came 30 minutes into the match when Mason Madrid orchestrated a brilliant connection with Melvin Velasquez, who calmly slotted home the opening goal. However, McEachern responded swiftly, leveling the score just 90 seconds later. Undeterred, Cass reclaimed the lead before halftime as Madrid again found Velasquez, sending the team into the break with a 2-1 advantage.
The second half belonged entirely to Cass. Just three minutes in, Velasquez returned the favor, setting up Madrid for a composed finish. Moments later, Gavin Mitzak extended the lead, capitalizing on another pinpoint assist from Madrid.
With 20 minutes remaining, Velasquez completed his hat trick from the penalty spot, cementing an outstanding individual performance. Mitzak then sealed the one-sided win, finishing off an assist from Velasquez to put an exclamation mark on the night.
Much of Cass’s dominance stemmed from their midfield command, where Kayden Pineda, Chris Mederos, and Francisco Martinez controlled the tempo, dictated play, and stifled McEachern’s advances.
The loss dropped the Indians to 1-4 on the season.
The Colonels (2-3) begin Region 7-AAAA action at home on Tuesday against Southeast Whitfield in a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.
