Colonels blank Model, 48-0

Cass junior RB Braylon Hill rushed for two touchdowns and caught a TD pass in the Colonels' 48-0 win over Model on Thursday.

The Cass Colonels scored on each of their first half possessions Thursday night and cruised to a 48-0 home win over the Model Blue Devils.


The Colonels' defense created turnovers and stifled the Blue Devils' offense for most of the night.


Quarterback Brody McWhorter tossed three touchdown passes. Braylon Hill rushed for two touchdowns while Jachai Delgado and Jerome Sanders added one touchdown run each. Chase Tatum, Hill, and Elijah Slocum hauled in the Cass touchdown receptions.


The Colonels received the opening kickoff and engineered an 80-yard drive to take a 6-0 lead just 3:16 into the first quarter. McWhorter connected with his tight end Chase Tatum for a 4-yard score but the PAT kick failed.


The Cass defense forced Model to punt on their first possession and the Colonels’ offense marched back down the field.


Braylon Hill scored the first of his touchdowns to culminate the drive with a 1-yard plunge. With 1:37 remaining in the first quarter the Colonels held a 13-0 lead following the first of six Mason Madrid PAT kicks.


Hill finished off the Colonels’ third possession with a 6-yard jaunt. The scoring run put Cass up 20-0 with 9:16 left in the first half.


Running back Jachai Delgado capped the fourth Cass offensive possession with a 13-yard scamper to give the Colonels a 27-0 advantage with 5:57 left in the second quarter. Ja’Kai Baldwin’s interception created the possession.


Following a fumble recovery by Jeremiah Deroche’ that gave the Colonels another short field, McWhorter hooked up with Hill for a 17-yard touchdown pass and a 34-0 lead with 4:56 remaining before the half.

The Cass defense got the ball back with less than a minute remaining in the half to set up another score. The offense responded with a 59-yard scoring drive. McWhorter found Slocum for a 38-yard strike and a 41-0 lead at the intermission.


With a running clock, Jerome Sanders sprinted for a 46-yard touchdown with 1:21 left in the third quarter. It was the only scoring play of the second half. McWhorter was 14-for-18 passing for 227 yards and three touchdowns all in the first half. He added 12 rushing yards on three attempts.


Hill totaled 87 rushing yards on nine carries. Sanders finished with 49 yards on five attempts and Jachai Delgado added 37 yards on six carries.


Slocum led the receiving corp with six catches for 86 yards.


The Colonels finished the night with 427 total yards on offense -- 200 rushing and 227 passing.


Model (1-1) hosts Coosa next Friday.


Cass (2-0) will entertain Adairsville (2-0) on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
