Cartersville soccer teams collect region wins at Woodland


The Cartersville girls and boys soccer teams collected important and hard-fought Region 7-5A wins Friday night at Woodland. The Lady Canes came from behind to beat the Lady Cats 3-2 and the Hurricanes scored a pair of goals in each half to top the Wildcats, 4-1.


Three consecutive goals in the second half by Abbey Craig (penalty kick), Macy Nicklas (free kick), and Craig again off an assist from Hattie Williams overcame a 1-0 halftime deficit to lift the Lady Canes.


Woodland (5-6-2, 1-3) scored again late but failed to find the tying goal.


The Lady Cats host Cass next Friday at 5:30 p.m. in another region tilt.


Cartersville (5-7-1, 3-1) secured a state tournament berth and at least a top-three seed. The Lady Canes play Bremen at home Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. and finish region play at home next Friday against Calhoun.

In the boys matchup, Cartersville posted two goals by Hector Galaviz in the first half and two more in the second half by Melvin Velasquez to secure the win over Woodland.


Velasquez assisted on the second Galaviz goal. Alex Rios had an assist on the first Velasquez goal of the second half.


The Canes (7-6-1, 2-2) host a non-region match with Bremen Monday at 7:30 p.m. and will close out region play next Friday at home against Calhoun at 7 p.m.


Woodland (5-5-3, 1-3) hosts Cass to wrap up region play next Friday night.


The Friday night results for Cartersville, Woodland, and Cass will determine the final three of four state tournament slots from Region 7-5A. Blessed Trinity has secured the region’s top seed.
