Cartersville gymnastics team opens 2022 competition season with quality marks

The Cartersville High School varsity gymnastics team opened their competition season last Friday at Central High School placing fifth as a team in a field of 45 competitors.

The event was won by Bremen High School with 105.70 points. The Canes totaled 88.95 points.

Canes' junior Annaston Wilson earned a State Preliminary qualifying score on floor exercise with a score of 9.1. Her performance secures one step toward earning a spot in the GHSA State Preliminaries.

Sophomore Jayla Byrd participated in her first varsity meet and scored well in vault and floor with an 8.25 and 8.4, respectively.

Sophomore Karley Garrison added quality scores in each of her events. She placed third in All Around with an All Around qualifying score of 34. She also placed third in bars and floor with qualifying individual scores of 8.5 and 9.2.

"We're looking at continuing to bank qualifying scores throughout the season and participate in the GHSA Gymnastics State Preliminaries in April," said Cartersville coach Kimberly Mosteller. "Athletes need at least three qualifying scores throughout the season All Around or in individual events. I'm confident the ladies will continue to impress the judges with their skill and expertise."

The Cartersville gymnasts will face their next opponents on March 16th at Westminster in Atlanta.
