Canes, Wildcats enjoy big offensive nights

On Tuesday, the Cartersville Purple Hurricanes and the Woodland Wildcats enjoyed productive nights at the plate in high-scoring performances.


Cartersville took a big early lead at home against Cass and closed out their region matchup in five innings. Woodland scored in every inning except the second in the Wildcats' six-inning region win at Southeast Whitfield.


In Ellijay, Adairsville came up short in the first game of their series with Gilmer County.

The Hurricanes started quickly on Tuesday, putting the visiting Cass Colonels away early, winning 12-1 in five innings at Richard Bell Field.


Cartersville scored two runs in the bottom of the first on sacrifice flies by Cole Crawford and Julez Pratt. They added three more runs in the second inning on RBI singles by Andrew Purdy and Tristan McKibben, plus another sacrifice fly by Brayden Logan.


Pratt homered to lead off the Cartersville third inning, and the Hurricanes added six more runs on six walks and three singles.


Cass salvaged a run in the top of the fifth on Chase Tatum’s solo home run. Dustin Wallin had the other Cass base hit later in the fifth inning.


McKibben (three RBI), Pratt (two RBI), and Purdy (two RBI) led the Canes with two hits. Logan (RBI), Crawford (three RBI), Nolan Elrod, and David Vargas contributed one hit. Cameron Cochran added one RBI.


Hunter Lovett (2 IP, 5ER, 6H, 0BB, 1K) started on the mound for Cass and was charged with the loss. Jay Sheldon (0.1 IP, 5ER, 1H, 4BB, 1K), Landon Lamb (0.0 IP, 2ER, 3H, 2BB), and Nic Wright (1.2 IP, 0R, 0H, 0BB, 4K) pitched in relief.


Purdy (3 IP, 0R, 0H, 0BB, 4K) made the pitching start for Cartersville and collected the win. Logan Shrewsbury (2 IP, 1ER, 2H, 1BB, 6K) wrapped up the final two innings on the mound.


Cartersville (6-7, 2-2) visits Cass (7-5, 2-2) for a doubleheader on Friday starting at 5 p.m. to conclude the region series.



WOODLAND 11, SOUTHEAST WHITFIELD 0


The Woodland bats peppered host Southeast Whitfield with 15 hits, including six extra-base hits Tuesday night in an 11-0 Region 7-4A win in Dalton.


Meanwhile, Wildcats’ pitchers Jake Clowers (5 IP, 0R, 2H, 2BB, 3K) and Kallen Reynolds (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 0BB, 1K) combined to shutout the Raiders.


Lucas Baker (double, three RBI) and Conner Lujan (triple, double) had three hits to pace the Woodland offense. Jonathan Ryan (RBI) and Preston Sorrells finished with two hits. Zaylen Cochran (double, RBI), Grant Tidwell (RBI), Clowers (double, RBI), Jacob Tatum, and Ben Turcotte (double) added one hit.



GILMER 4, ADAIRSVILLE 1


All the runs scored in the game occurred in the fourth inning Tuesday night in Ellijay as the Gilmer Bobcats stopped the Adairsville Tigers 4-1 in a Region 7-AAA contest.


The series will continue Wednesday at Adairsville and conclude on Friday back in Ellijay.


Jarrett Scott doubled to lead off the Tigers’ fourth inning, moved to third on a single by Isaac Burnett, and scored on a one-out double by Braxton Ryan.


Gilmer used four singles, a walk, and a double to plate their four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.


Kaiden Coker (3.2 IP, 4ER, 5H, 0BB, 5K) made the pitching start for Adairsville and was the pitcher of record. McCayden Hufstetler (2.1 IP, 0R, 0H, 2BB, 5K) allowed just two walks while retiring the final seven outs for the Tigers — five by strikeout.


Scott and Ryan (RBI) had two hits for Adairsville. Burnett and Peyton Bowen added one hit for the Tigers.


Wednesday’s second game of the series will be a 5:30 p.m. start.
