Canes place third, Lady Canes 8th at GHSA Class AAAAA State Golf Championships
The Cartersville boys’ golf team finished third and the Lady Canes placed eighth in their respective GHSA Class AAAAA State Championship Tournaments Monday and Tuesday at Cartersville Country Club and Fields Ferry Golf Club (Calhoun), respectively.
The Canes, who were trailing by only one shot after Monday’s opening round, shot 307 on Tuesday and placed third for the second straight year with a two-day total score of 612.
Cambridge won the state championship in Class 5A with a two-day total of 600. Northgate was the state runner-up at 606.
Brody Tidwell led Cartersville with a second round 74. Andrew Lutjens followed with a 76. Noah Pogue fired a 77 and Anderson McCary carded an 80 on Tuesday. Reid Lowry shot 81 in the final round and Owen Dunn closed with an 85.
In addition to the back-to-back third place finishes for the Cartersville boys, the Canes were fourth in 2019, and second in 2021. NOTE: There were no spring sports in 2020.
The Hurricanes have six state titles all time, winning Class A in 1967 and Class AA in 1990, 1997, 2000, 2001, and 2002.
The Lady Canes earned an eighth-place finish with a two-day total of 577.
Greenbrier (503) won the title with Northview (513) finishing as Class AAAAA runner-up.
Brooklyn Heath, who had a hole-in-one Tuesday on hole number 5, carded an 80 Tuesday to lead the Lady Canes in the final round. She was followed by Sophie Kim (91), Lily Cagle (118), and Maddy Morris (128).
