This week’s Athletes Beyond Bartow edition includes updates on five local professionals and more than three dozen collegiate contributors across the country.



NBA


ASHTON HAGANS — Portland Trailblazers — (4th yr. pro; Cartersville native; Kentucky; Newton HS) … scored five points with four assists, two rebounds, and one steal last Thursday in a 100-92 home loss to the Golden State Warriors. The Blazers also had home losses during the week to New Orleans, Houston, and Sacramento. Portland finished the season with a 21-61 mark. The 24-year-old averaged 4.2 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 2.8 assists. He appeared in 19 NBA games this season and averaged just over 16 minutes per game. In 20 games with the Rip City Remix of the NBA G League, Hagans averaged 16.1 points, 4.9 rebounds, 9.7 assists, and 1.7 steals in 31.9 minutes.



BASKETBALL SUPER LEAGUE


A.J. MOSBY, JR. — Sudbury Five (6th-yr. pro; Alcorn State; Cartersville HS) … In a pair of home wins over the Los Angeles Ignite last Saturday and Sunday (112-102 and 109-90) Mosby logged a total of 86 minutes. He scored 19 points on Saturday and 33 on Sunday. In the two games, the point guard totaled 18 rebounds, 12 assists, and two steals. The Five (16-11) play at the Newfoundland Rogues on Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday.



MiLB


MASON BARNETT — Northwest Arkansas Naturals (3rd-yr. pro; Kansas City Royals Double-A affiliate; Auburn; Cartersville HS) … made a five-inning start but received no decision in the Naturals’ 4-2 win last Friday at the San Antonio Missions. The right-handed pitcher allowed two earned runs on four hits and three walks. He fanned three. Northwest Arkansas (3-6) hosts the Midland Rockhounds for a six-game series this Tuesday through Sunday.


LOGAN MARTIN — Columbia Fireflies (2nd-yr. pro; Kansas City Royals Single-A affiliate; Kentucky; Cartersville HS) … made pitching starts on April 9 and this past Sunday receiving no decision in either outing. The Fireflies won both home games he appeared in against the Myrtle Beach Pelicans. Martin went three innings in each start. He allowed a total of six earned runs on eight hits and four walks while striking out nine. Columbia (6-3) has a six-game series on Tuesday through Sunday at the Charleston RiverDogs.


ANTHONY SEIGLER — Somerset Patriots (7th-yr. pro; NY Yankees Double-A affiliate; Cartersville HS) … started four games at second base last week in the Patriots’ series at the New Hampshire Fisher Cats. Seigler was 3-for-14 including a walk, two runs scored, and one RBI. Somerset (4-5) hosts the Hartford Yard Goats on Tuesday through Sunday in a six-game series.



U.S. OLYMPIC WRESTLING


CALEB HENSON — Virginia Tech (So., Woodland HS) … will compete with eleven other wrestlers in the 65Kg division on Friday and Saturday at Penn State with the winner qualifying for the Paris Olympics. The single-elimination challenge tournament is held in each weight class on Friday. The finals for each division will be a best-of-three series. Televised coverage begins on Peacock at 10 a.m. on Friday. Henson is the current NCAA Champion in the 149-pound weight class.



TENNIS


EMILY BUSH — Young Harris College (So., Cartersville HS) … lost her Line 1 doubles set with partner Meghna Mallath 4-6 and lost her Line 2 singles match 3-6, 7-6 (6-0), 4-6 as the Mountain Lions lost 4-3 this past Saturday to visiting Erskine College. Young Harris (9-10, 3-3 Conference Carolinas) plays at North Greenville University on Monday before hosting Barton College and Chowan University on Friday and Saturday.


CONNOR GUNNELL — Shorter University (Sr., Woodland HS) … lost his Line 6 singles match 0-6, 0-6 in the Hawks’ 0-7 home loss this past Saturday to Mississippi College. Shorter (0-10, 0-9 Gulf South Conference) plays an exhibition at home on Tuesday with Wallace State-Hanceville CC.


EMILY SURCEY — Samford University (Jr., Cass HS) … in a pair of 7-0 team wins over Alabama A&M last Thursday and UNC Greensboro last Saturday, Surcey paired with Grace Keller for a pair of Line 2 doubles set wins. She also won her Line 2 singles matches 6-0, 6-3 and 7-5, 6-1. The Bulldogs (9-11, 4-3) face Chattanooga on Thursday morning in the opening round of the Southern Conference Tournament.


BRYCE VAN ORDER — Piedmont University (Sr., Woodland HS) … won his Line 3 singles match 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 this past Saturday in the Lions’ 9-0 win at Asbury College. He also won a Line 2 doubles set with partner Jackson Traylor, 8-5, in a Piedmont 9-0 win Sunday at Maryville College (Tenn.). The Lions (17-6, 5-0 Collegiate Conference of the South) host Belhaven University (Miss.) on Saturday morning.



TRACK AND FIELD


PATRICK BOLLWERK — Berry College (Jr., Woodland HS) … placed 33rd (4:18.23) in the 1500-meter run this past weekend at the Berry Field Day Invitational. He was 56th (2:06.31) in the 800 meters. Berry travels to Conway, Arkansas April 26-27 for the Southern Athletic Association conference championships.


McKINLEY CHAPPELL — Berry College (So,., Woodland HS) … was 44th (4:24.10) in the 1500 meter run and placed 59th (2:07.05) in the 800 meters this past weekend at the Berry Field Day Invitational. Berry travels to Conway, Arkansas April 26-27 for the Southern Athletic Association conference championships.


DANIELLE THAYER — Augusta University (Fr., Woodland HS) … placed fifth in the 3000 meter steeplechase (13:02.07) this past weekend at the Anderson University (Indiana) Electric City Invitational. Net on the Jaguars’ schedule is the Georgia Tech Invitational on Friday and Saturday.



GOLF


BUCK BRUMLOW — University of Georgia (Jr., Cartersville HS) … carded rounds of 80-75-75 and tied for 34th as an individual as the Bulldogs finished fifth behind Florida, Purdue, Wake Forest, and Georgia Tech at the Naples, Florida Calusa Cup on April 7-9. Georgia plays in the SEC Championships April 24-26 at Seaside Golf Resort on St. Simons Island.



SOFTBALL


LAINEY BAKER — Union University (So., Woodland HS) … pitched all eight innings of a 4-3 home loss last Friday to Lee University. She allowed four earned runs on five hits, one walk, and one hit batsman while striking out eleven. The Bulldogs (24-18, 13-11 Gulf South Conference) won the other two games in the series in Lee. Union University hosts Lane College on Tuesday and a three-game series with the University of Montevallo on Friday and Saturday.


Haylee Dishmon has 38 stolen bases this season, setting a new single-season record at Georgia Highlands.

HAYLEE DISHMON — Georgia Highlands College (Fr., Cass HS) … in doubleheader sweeps at East Georgia State and at home against Andrew College last week, Dishmon was 6-for-11 at the plate with a double, two walks, and four RBIs. She also stole seven bases in the two doubleheaders establishing a new single-season school record with ten regular season games and the conference tournament remaining. She has 38 stolen bases in 37 games and has only been caught twice.


ANSLEY EVANS — Reinhardt University (Jr., Woodland HS) … went 7-for-18 including two walks and nine RBIs last week as the Eagles went 5-1 in three doubleheaders. She scored three runs and stole one base. RU, ranked No. 24 NAIA, split games with Tennessee Wesleyan and swept Montreat College (NC) and Milligan University (Tenn.). The Eagles (32-8, 21-1 Appalachian Athletic Conference) have a doubleheader on Friday at Johnson University (Tenn.).


ALYSSA JARRETT — Piedmont University (Fr., Adairsville HS) … started at catcher and went 1-for-6 with one RBI at the plate in two home losses to Huntingdon College this past Saturday. The Lions (16-15, 10-4 Collegiate Conference of the South) host 5th-ranked Berry College on Thursday and Maryville College (Tenn.) on Saturday.


SADYE JOHNSON — University of North Georgia (Jr., Adairsville HS) … had an RBI double in a pinch-hitting role and was entered defensively at catcher this past Saturday in a 12-3 home loss to Georgia College. The NCAA D2 2nd-ranked Nighthawks were 3-2 last week splitting two games with Alabama-Huntsville and winning two of three with Georgia College. UNG (41-7, 19-2) wraps up the regular season with three games on Saturday and Sunday at Lander University before hosting the Peach Belt Conference tournament on April 26-28.


ERYN LEE — Reinhardt University (So., Cass HS) … saw action in four games last week as the Eagles went 5-1 in doubleheaders against Tennessee Wesleyan, Montreat, and Milligan. Lee was 3-for-7 at the plate with one walk and one RBI. She scored four runs and stole three bases. Reinhardt (32-8, 21-1 Appalachian Athletic Conference) has a doubleheader on Friday at Johnson University (Tenn.). 


RACHAEL LEE — Gulf Coast State CC (So., Cass HS) … went 6-for-15 with one double and three runs scored as the Commodores went 2-2 last week with home wins over Tallahassee CC and road losses at 2nd-ranked Northwest Florida State CC. 12th-ranked GCSCC (36-12, 10-6 FCSAA) entertains Pensacola State on Saturday.


AVA PERKINS — Lee University (Fr., Cartersville HS) … made a start as a designated player in one of the Flames' three games last weekend at Union University. She was 0-for-2 with one walk in the 4-3 loss on Saturday. Lee (16-23, 10-14 Gulf South Conference) hosts Emmanuel University for a doubleheader on Wednesday and Delta State University for three games on Saturday and Sunday.


HOPE SHORT — Shorter University (Sr., Cartersville HS) … went 0-for-3 in the Hawks’ loss last Tuesday at Georgia Southwestern. Shorter (2-42, 1-26 Gulf South Conference) has dropped 33 straight and concludes the season on Saturday and Sunday at home against the University of West Alabama. 


ALEXA VARNER — Shorter University (Sr., Adairsville HS) … went 0-for-5 in three appearances at Georgia Southwestern and the University of Alabama-Huntsville. The Hawks (2-42, 1-26 Gulf South Conference) host the University of West Alabama on Saturday and Sunday for a three-game series.


ALEXIS WOODS — Tennessee State University (Fr., Cass HS) … went 1-for-7 with one walk, one RBI, and two runs scored as the Tigers swept three home games with Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville this past weekend. TSU (20-18, 11-7 Ohio Valley Conference) plays at Middle Tennessee on Wednesday and hosts a three-game series with Western Illinois on Saturday and Sunday.



BASEBALL


DREW BILLINGS — Trinity Baptist College (So., Woodland HS) … retired the final four outs this past Saturday in a 17-13 home loss to Atlantis University. He allowed one hit and had two strikeouts with no decision. The Eagles (17-19, 7-2 NCCAA D2 South) play a doubleheader at Thomas University (Ga.) on Tuesday and will face Bob Jones University in Jacksonville for three games on Friday and Saturday.


CURT BONNER — LaGrange College (So., Cartersville HS) … went 1-for-4 with one run scored this past Saturday in a catching start at Belhaven University (Miss.). The Panthers lost all three games on the road trip. LaGrange (17-10, 4-5 Collegiate Conference of the South) plays at Berry College on Tuesday night and hosts Piedmont University for three games on Friday through Sunday.


CADEN CARROLL — Kennesaw State University (Fr., Cartersville HS) … made a sixth-inning pitching appearance last Tuesday in a 15-5, eight-inning loss at Georgia. Carroll allowed one earned run on two hits. The Owls (20-14, 10-5 Atlantic Sun Conference) visit Georgia State on Tuesday, host Georgia Southern on Wednesday night, and play a three-game series at Queens University in Charlotte on Friday through Sunday.


HARRISON CHILDERS — Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College (Fr., Cartersville HS) … had an unsuccessful pinch hitting appearance this past Saturday in a 20-4 win at East Georgia College. The Stallions split the four-game series with the Bobcats. ABAC (15-23, 7-9 GCAA) has a four-game conference series this week with Gordon State College.


MICAH EARWOOD — Georgia State University (R-So., Cartersville HS) … started the seventh inning on the mound last Wednesday in an eventual 8-5 win at Jacksonville State but did not record an out. He yielded three earned runs on three hits, one walk, and one hit batsman before being lifted. The Panthers also won two of three home games last weekend over Southern Mississippi. GSU (18-17, 9-6 Sun Belt Conference) entertains Kennesaw State on Tuesday and travels to Troy University for a three-game set on Friday through Sunday.


COLIN EATON — Gordon State College (So., Cartersville HS) … made a 1-⅓ inning start last Saturday allowing four runs (one earned) on four hits in an eventual 12-11 home win over Andrew College. Eaton received no decision. The Highlanders (25-17, 11-5 GCAA) have a four-game conference series this week with ABAC.


KENNY JINKS — Wheeling University (R-Sr., Woodland HS) … made a six-inning pitching start this past Sunday and was charged with the loss in a 6-2 home loss to Frostburg State. Jinks allowed four earned runs on eight hits with no walks. He recorded five strikeouts. The Cardinals (18-16, 8-11 Mountain East Conference) visit Walsh University (Ohio) on Tuesday and Fairmont State University (WV) on Saturday and Sunday for three games.


COLT McKIBBEN — Lee University (So., Cartersville HS) … pitched two shutout innings last Wednesday in a home start and team 10-5 win over Tusculum University. McKibben received no decision. He allowed one hit, two walks, and one hit batsman facing nine batters. The Flames (31-11, 18-6 Gulf South Conference) visit the University of North Georgia on Tuesday and will host Delta State University on Friday and Saturday in a three-game conference series.


DREW ROTHSCHILD — Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College (So., Cartersville HS) … went 7-for-16 in a four-game conference series last week with East Georgia College. He walked three times and had three RBIs. The Stallions (15-23, 7-9 GCAA) play four conference games this week with Gordon State College.


TREY SCOTT — Alabama A&M University (Jr., Cass HS) … pitched the fifth inning last Tuesday at the University of Tennessee in a 20-2 loss. Scott allowed five earned runs on two hits, five walks, and one hit batsman. He recorded one strikeout. The Bulldogs also won one of three conference games at Jackson State over the weekend. AAMU (6-28, 4-11 SWAC) hosts Faulkner on Tuesday and plays a three-game conference series at Florida A&M on Friday through Sunday.


PHILLIP SCHILTZ — Coastal Alabama South CC (Fr.., Cartersville HS) … tossed a five-inning, complete-game in a 12-2 home win this past Sunday over Wallace State-Hanceville CC. The righty allowed two earned runs on one hit and five walks. He fanned four of 22 batters faced. The Coyotes (21-19, 18-6 ACCC) host two games with Shelton State CC on Thursday and play two at Shelton State on Saturday.


SCOTTY SMITH — Covenant College (Jr., Woodland HS) … made a six-inning pitching start but received no decision in an eventual 7-3 loss this past Saturday at Piedmont University. Smith allowed three earned runs on five hits, two walks, and one hit batsman. He struck out six of 27 batters faced. The Scots (12-20, 5-7 Collegiate Conference of the South) host Sewanee for a doubleheader on Tuesday and Maryville College (Tenn.) for a three-game conference series on Friday and Saturday.


STEVEN SPELL — Young Harris College (Grad student, Cass HS) … hit safely in all three games and was 4-for-13 with four walks and two doubles as the 12th-ranked Mountain Lions swept a conference series at Southern Wesleyan University (SC). The third baseman also scored five runs. YHC (31-9, 18-6 Conference Carolinas) hosts Carson-Newman University on Tuesday, plays at Tusculum University on Wednesday, and entertains a three-game conference series with Emmanuel University on Friday and Saturday.


KADEN STEPHENSON — Piedmont University (Fr., Cartersville HS) … went 1-for-2 in a pair of pinch-hitting appearances during a home, three-game series sweep of Covenant College. The Lions (19-11, 7-2 Collegiate Conference of the South) visit Oglehorpe University on Tuesday and will play three games on Friday through Sunday at LaGrange College.


PRESTON WELCHEL — Cumberland University (Jr., Cartersville HS) … went 2-for-10 with one double, one home run, two walks, and three RBIs as the Phoenix won two of three games at Bethel University (Tenn.). Cumberland plays at Milligan University on Tuesday and Friday and Saturday at NAIA 4th-ranked University of the Cumberlands (Ky.).


COHEN WILBANKS — Georgia Gwinnett College (Jr., Cartersville HS) … went 2-for-7 in a pair of starts and team wins at 20th-ranked Tennessee Wesleyan University. He had one double, one RBI, and one sacrifice. The NAIA 3rd-ranked Grizzlies (35-6, 2-0) went 2-1 in the series and this week host Brewton-Parker on Tuesday before hosting the CAC Showdown on Friday and Saturday. GGC will play Crowley’s Ridge (Ark.), Florida National, and Voorhees (SC) in the weekend conference games. 


JORDAN WILKIE — Augusta University (Sr., Cartersville HS) … went 2-for-11 in three home starts this past weekend against USC Aiken. The Jags were 1-2 in the series. Wilkie had one walk and scored four runs. Augusta (22-19, 11-10 Peach Belt Conference) plays at Erskine College on Tuesday and visits Americus for a three-game series on Friday through Sunday at Georgia Southwestern State.
