Updates on local professional and collegiate athletes for the week ending April 13.
MiLB
MASON BARNETT — Las Vegas Aviators (Oakland A’s Triple-A affiliate; 4th-year pro; Auburn; Cartersville HS) … made a 4-⅓ innings pitching start last Thursday and received no decision in an eventual 7-6 loss at the El Paso Chihuahuas. The 24-year-old righty was charged with six earned runs on eight hits and two walks. He struck out two and left the game trailing 6-3. Las Vegas won four of six games during the week at El Paso and improved to 10-5 in the Pacific Coast League West. The Aviators host the Sugar Land Space Cowboys for six games on Tuesday through Sunday.
LOGAN MARTIN — Quad Cities River Bandits (Kansas City Royals High-Class A affiliate; 3rd-year pro; Kentucky; Cartersville HS) … made two pitching starts at home last week against the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers and was charged with one pitching loss. On April 8, he went 4-⅓ innings and allowed two earned runs on five hits with one walk and five strikeouts in a 4-0 loss. Last Sunday, Martin worked five innings and allowed one earned run on two hits and two walks with six strikeouts during a 5-1 loss. Quad Cities went 3-3 in the series and finished the week 6-3, leading the Midwest League West Division. The River Bandits have a six-game series at the Beloit Sky Carp on Tuesday through Sunday.
ANTHONY SEIGLER — Nashville Sounds (Milwaukee Brewers Triple-A affiliate; 8th-year pro; Cartersville HS) …in time at catcher and second base, the 25-year-old was 5-for-16 at the plate last week, starting five of six home games against the Memphis Red Birds. His hits included one triple and one double with one RBI. He walked twice, scored two runs, and stole two bases as the Sounds won four of the six games in the series. Nashville (7-7) plays a six-game series Tuesday through Sunday at the Charlotte Knights.
USL LEAGUE ONE

RUSSELL SHEALY — Union Omaha (USL League One; 8th-year pro; Syracuse; Cartersville resident; Darlington HS) . . . the goalkeeper has one start this season on March 12 with one save and three goals against in a 3-0 loss at the Greenville Triumph. Union Omaha is 1-2 in its first three matches this season and plays San Antonio FC on Tuesday as part of the U.S. Open Cup. Their next USL League One game is Saturday, April 26, at the New Mexico United in Albuquerque.
SOFTBALL
KILEY ARNOLD — Shorter University (So., Cartersville HS) … went 2-for-7 at the plate in a doubleheader split at Emmanuel University (GA) last Friday. She scored one run. The Hawks (11-28, 8-12 Conference Carolinas) host Erskine College (SC) for two conference games on Monday and Southern Wesleyan University (SC) for a league doubleheader on Wednesday.
HAYLEE DISHMON — Georgia Highlands College (So., Cass HS) … appeared in three games for the Chargers last week and was 3-for-10 at the plate, including one walk and three stolen bases. GHC went 3-1, winning twice at Andrew College and splitting a home doubleheader on Saturday with Gordon State. The Chargers (29-13, 10-4 GCAA) visit conference-leading Georgia Military College for two games on Thursday.
PEYTON DORN — Brewton-Parker College (Fr., Woodland HS) … collected her first collegiate pitching save with a shutout seventh inning in the Barons’ 9-6 win at Tennessee Southern University on April 8. Dorn did not allow a hit but walked one batter and hit one with a pitch. She also faced one batter in the seventh inning of a 9-8 loss at Blue Mountain Christian on April 7. Brewton-Parker (14-21-1, 8-12 Southern States Athletic Conference) hosts Point University for two games on Wednesday and Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College for a doubleheader on Thursday.

MEGAN GREGORY — Campbell University (So., Adairsville HS) … made two pitching starts last week and picked up two wins, improving her season record to 9-3. Gregory scattered five hits and four walks last Saturday as the Camels beat Hampton University 10-1 in five innings. On April 8, she tossed a four-hit shutout in Campbell’s 1-0 home victory over Coastal Carolina. She fanned five and walked six in her complete game performance, finishing the week with a 0.58 ERA and ten strikeouts. As a result, Gregory was selected CAA Softball Co-Pitcher of the Week, giving her the honor in consecutive weeks. The Camels (30-11, 15-3 Coastal Athletic Association) visit East Carolina University on Tuesday and host a three-game conference series with Drexel University on Friday and Saturday.
ANSLEY HIGHT — Reinhardt University (So., Cass HS) … in the Eagles’ six wins last week — two each over Truett-McConnell University, Bluefield University (VA), and Columbia College (SC) — she was 9-for-16 at the plate, including two home runs, one triple, one double, one walk, five runs, and eight RBI. Reinhardt (22-8, 19-5 Appalachian Athletic Conference) hosts Brenau University on Monday and visits Milligan University (TN) for two games on Friday.

SADYE JOHNSON — University of North Georgia (Sr., Adairsville HS) … hit a two-run homer in a fourth-inning pinch-hitting appearance last Saturday as the Nighthawks beat visiting Columbus State University 11-2. Eighth-ranked North Georgia (37-8, 16-2 Peach Belt Conference) has a three-game conference series at Augusta University on Friday and Saturday.
ERYN LEE — Reinhardt University (Jr., Cass HS) … went 2-for-2 with one RBI and scored two runs in a home doubleheader sweep of Bluefield University (VA) last Thursday. The Eagles (22-8, 19-5 Appalachian Athletic Conference) finished the week 6-0. They host Brenau University (GA) on Monday and travel to Milligan University (TN) on Friday for doubleheaders.
RACHAEL LEE — Valdosta State University (Jr., Cass HS) … went 4-for-14 with one double and two RBI at the plate as the Blazers went 1-4 at home last week. VSU dropped both games of a doubleheader with Embry-Riddle University (FL) on April 8 and lost two of three with Lee University last Friday and Saturday. The Blazers (24-19, 17-9 Gulf South Conference) travel to Memphis for three games at Christian Brothers University on Friday and Saturday.
AVA PERKINS — Lee University (So., Cartersville HS) … went 5-for-13 in five games last week. The Flames were swept in a home doubleheader with 8th-ranked North Georgia but won two of three games at Valdosta State University. Perkins hit her seventh home run, scored four, coaxed one walk, stole one base, and had three RBI. Lee (22-22, 9-17 Gulf South Conference) has a three-game conference series at the University of West Alabama on Friday and Saturday.
ALEXIS WOODS — Tennessee State University (So., Cass HS) … went 1-for-8 with one sacrifice and one RBI as the Tigers lost all three games of a conference series at Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville. TSU (20-13, 10-7 Ohio Valley Conference) visits UT-Chattanooga on Wednesday and hosts a conference series with Eastern Illinois on Friday and Saturday.
BASEBALL
ROWAN BILLINGS — Berry College (So., Woodland HS) … faced two batters this past Sunday, walking one and hitting one, in a 19-6 home win over Hendrix College (AR). The Vikings (17-15, 6-6 Southern Athletic Association) host three games with Millsaps College (MS) on Friday and Saturday.
DREW BILLINGS — Trinity Baptist College (Jr., Woodland HS) … made two relief appearances in a doubleheader sweep last Saturday over visiting Atlantis University (FL). Billings picked up a pitching victory with a three-inning appearance during a 6-5 win. In the two games, he worked four innings, allowing one earned run on four hits and two walks with three strikeouts. The Eagles (20-14, 9-3 NCCAA D-2 South Region) host Thomas University (GA) for a doubleheader on Tuesday.
CURT BONNER — LaGrange College (Jr., Cartersville HS) … extended his hitting streak to seven games and went 8-for-16 in four games last week. The Panthers lost at Oglethorpe and dropped two of three games at Piedmont University. Bonner had three doubles, one walk, one sacrifice fly, five RBI, and scored two runs. LaGrange (15-18, 7-5 Collegiate Conference of the South) has a three-game series at Maryville College (TN) on Thursday through Saturday.
HARRISON CHILDERS — Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College (So., Cartersville HS) … went 3-for-14, including two walks, one sacrifice fly, two RBI, and scored three runs as the Stallions won at Thomas University (GA) on April 8 and took two of three games at Point University last weekend. ABAC (26-14, 15-12 Southern States Athletic Conference) hosts a non-conference three-game series with Toccoa Falls College on Thursday and Friday.
CALEB DANIEL — Georgia Tech (Fr., Cartersville HS) … went 2-for-15 in four home games last week, including one double, three walks, and one RBI. The 13th-ranked Yellow Jackets lost to 7th-ranked Auburn but swept visiting California in conference games. Georgia Tech (29-7, 14-4 Atlantic Coast Conference) plays the 3rd-ranked University of Georgia Tuesday night at Truist Park before visiting the University of Miami for a three-game conference series Friday through Sunday.
ELLIOTT EASTIN — Covenant College (R-So., Cartersville HS) … went 5-for-18 at the plate with one RBI in four road starts last week. The Scots won at Berry College on April 8 but were swept in a three-game series at Maryville College (TN). On Tuesday, Covenant (13-19, 2-13 Collegiate Conference of the South) hosts Sewanee-University of the South. It will play Ferrum College (VA) in a three-game non-conference series on Friday and Saturday at TVA Stadium in Johnson City, Tennessee.
GEOFFREY GORE — Bevill State CC (So., Cartersville HS) … made relief appearances totaling one inning in home losses to Motlow State CC on April 8 and Central Alabama CC last Saturday. He allowed five earned runs on three hits with one strikeout. The Bears (26-20, 22-10 Alabama Community College Conference Division II) visit Jackson State CC (TN) for a doubleheader on Tuesday, host two games with Bishop State CC on Thursday, and travel to Bishop State for two games on Saturday.
DAVID JINKS — University of Maine-Augusta (Fr., Excel Christian Academy) … went 2-for-3 with one RBI on a sacrifice fly and scored one run last Thursday in a 5-2 win at Central Maine CC. The Moose (6-12, 3-0 Yankee Small College Conference) visit York County CC on Tuesday, host Quincy College on Friday, and travel to Southern Maine CC on Saturday.
SAM MELTON — Guilford College (Jr., Cartersville HS) … went 1-for-1 with two walks and scored one run in a start at first base on April 8 and a 7-6 win by the Quakers. Guilford (18-12, 6-10 Old Dominion Athletic Conference) visits Carolina University (NC) on Tuesday, Averett University (VA) on Wednesday, and plays a doubleheader at Eastern Mennonite University (VA) on Saturday.

LUKE MILLER — Columbus State University (Fr., Cartersville HS) … earned Peach Belt Conference Freshman of the Week honors by going 6-for-22, including one home run, two doubles, two walks, two runs scored, three RBI, and one stolen base. The Cougars went 2-3 in five games, with two losses at the University of West Florida and two wins in three home games against Georgia Southwestern. Miller has a .313 batting average with four homers and 27 RBI in 35 games. The Cougars (22-18, 12-9 Peach Belt Conference) visit Middle Georgia State on Tuesday and play a three-game series at Georgia College on Thursday through Saturday.
HANK SMITH — University of West Georgia (R-So., Cartersville HS) … went 1-for-9 and was hit by a pitch twice in three starts last week — a loss at Samford and one win in two games at Jacksonville University. Smith also scored one run. The Wolves (16-17, 7-8 Atlantic Sun Conference) visit Kennesaw State on Tuesday and host the University of North Florida for three games on Thursday through Saturday.
SCOTTY SMITH — Covenant College (Sr., Woodland HS) … made a 6-⅔ innings start with no decision in an eventual 7-3 loss at Maryville College (TN) last Saturday. Smith allowed three earned runs on five hits, two walks, and one hit batsman and left the game tied 3-3. The Scots (13-19, 2-13 Collegiate Conference of the South) host Sewanee-University of the South on Tuesday and will face Ferrum College (VA) in a three-game series at TVA Stadium in Johnson City, Tennessee, on Friday and Saturday.
PRESTON WELCHEL — Cumberland University (Sr., Cartersville HS) … went 7-for-16 in five games last week. The Phoenix won two home games with Campbellsville University (KY) and lost three games at Tennessee Wesleyan University. Welchel had one home run, one double, four walks, five runs scored, and three RBI. Cumberland (29-13-1, 9-3 Mid-South Conference) has three games at Freed-Hardeman University on Friday and Saturday.
DAVIS WILLIAMS — University of West Georgia (R-So., Cartersville HS) … pitched a scoreless ninth inning, allowing one hit in a 9-3 home loss to Jacksonville University last Saturday. UWG (16-17, 7-8 Atlantic Sun Conference) visit Kennesaw State University on Tuesday and host the University of North Florida in a three-game conference series on Thursday through Saturday.
SAWYER WILSON — Columbus State University (Fr., Cartersville HS) … made two pitching appearances in a Cougars’ home loss to Georgia Southwestern last Saturday and at the University of West Florida on April 9. He allowed four earned runs on eight hits, one walk, and one hit batsman. Wilson struck out six. He was charged with the pitching loss at West Florida. The Cougars (22-18, 12-9 Peach Belt Conference) visit Middle Georgia State on Tuesday and play a three-game series at Georgia College on Thursday through Saturday.
BEACH VOLLEYBALL
LAUREN LAWSON — University of South Carolina (Fr., Cartersville HS) … paired with Kennedy Westendorff to win two Line 5 matches as the Gamecocks finished 3-1 at the LSU Battle at the Bayou this past weekend. The USC duo won by identical 21-16 and 21-18 scores during a 4-1 victory over Stephen F. Austin and a 4-1 team win over Tulane. South Carolina also defeated Houston Christian and lost to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi during the weekend, but Lawson was not in the lineup. The Gamecocks (11-14, 0-3 CCSA) will host the Palmetto Invitational on Friday and Saturday, facing Florida Gulf Coast, Georgia State, Jacksonville, and Coastal Carolina.
TENNIS
EMILY BUSH — University of North Georgia (Jr., Cartersville HS) … won her Line 6 singles match 6-2, 0-6, 6-3 on April 8 as the Nighthawks beat 16th-ranked West Alabama 4-1 at the Rome Tennis Center. Bush and Linn Goerdes were trailing 6-5 in their doubles set when the team match was clinched. This past Saturday, she won 6-2, 6-0 at Line 5 singles as 11th-ranked UNG won 6-1 at Georgia College. She again paired with Goerdes at Line 2 doubles and won 6-1 in Milledgeville. UNG (13-6, 3-1 Peach Belt Conference) hosts 14th-ranked Columbus State University on Monday. The Nighthawks will play 22nd-ranked Mississippi College on Thursday in Montgomery and host Georgia Southwestern on Saturday.
EMILY SURCEY — Samford University (Sr., Cass HS) … teamed with Sara Erenda to win 6-3 at Line 1 doubles last Thursday in a 5-2 team loss at Mercer University. She also lost 2-6, 1-6 at Line 1 singles. Surcey suffered a narrow 6-7, 5-7 loss this past Saturday at Line 1 singles in a 4-3 team loss at UT-Chattanooga. She and Erenda also lost at Line 1 doubles, 2-6. Samford (11-10) opens the Southern Conference Tournament on Thursday afternoon at the Champions Club in Chattanooga against third-seeded Wofford.
BRYCE VAN ORDER — Piedmont University (Grad student, Woodland HS) … won his Line 1 singles match 6-0, 6-2 as the Lions won at LaGrange College 7-0 last Friday. Also, on Friday in LaGrange, he lost 3-6, 0-6 at Line 2 singles in the Lions’ 2-5 team loss to the University of California-Santa Cruz. On Wednesday, Piedmont (11-10, 4-2 Collegiate Conference of the South) has a non-conference match at Centre College (KY). The CCS Tournament will be held in Chattanooga on April 24-26.
TRACK AND FIELD
PATRICK BOLLWERK — Berry College (Sr., Woodland HS) … ran 33rd (4:23.68) in the 1500-meter run last weekend at the Berry Field Day and invitational. The Vikings will participate in the Mountain Laurel Open on Saturday in Sewanee, Tennessee.
McKINLEY CHAPPELL — Berry College (Jr., Woodland HS) … finished 18th (16:12.97) in the 5000-meter run last Saturday at the Berry Field Day and Invitational. Berry’s next meet is on Saturday at Sewanee-University of the South.
HAYDEN CAGLE — Berry College (Sr., Cartersville HS) … placed 14th (131-2) in the javelin throw, 23rd ((38-11) in the shot put, and 30th (110-2) in the hammer throw at the Vikings’ Field Day and Invitational. Berry competes on Saturday at the Mountain Laurel Open in Sewanee, Tennessee.
JUNE DeLAUDER — Reinhardt University (Fr., Cass HS) … finished 14th (17.63) in the 100-meter hurdles at the Berry College Field Day and Invitational. The Eagles will be at the Appalachian Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships on Thursday through Saturday in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
ANDY FORSYTH — Berry College (Fr., Woodland HS) … placed fifth (1:58.05) in the 800-meter run and 13th (4:06.40) in the 1500-meter run at the Vikings’ Field Day and Invitational. Next for Berry is the Sewanee Mountain Laurel Open on Saturday.
TYLER JONES — University of West Georgia (So., Woodland HS) … placed 29th (16:28.75) in the 5000-meter run this past weekend’s Berry College Field Day and Invitational. The Wolves are back in action on Friday at the Georgia Tech Invitational.
KENDRICK PRICE — Troy University (Fr., Cartersville HS) … finished 39th (11.13) in the 100-meter dash and 41st in the 200-meter dash at the University of Alabama Crimson Tide Invitational last weekend in Tuscaloosa. The Trojans run on Friday at the Georgia Tech Invitational in Atlanta.
JOE WOMACK — Furman University (Fr., Cartersville resident, Darlington HS) … finished 4th (49.51) in the 400-meter dash last weekend at the Asheville Bulldog Invitational. The Paladins travel to the Bryan Clay Invitational on Wednesday in Azusa, California.
