Athletes Beyond Bartow: Barnett and Seigler prepare for MiLB playoffs; Lawrence and Jags fall to 0-2

Former Cartersville High quarterback Trevor Lawrence and the NFL Jacksonville Jaguars fell to 0-2 this past week with a loss to the Cleveland Browns.


Meanwhile, former Canes and Minor League Baseball players Mason Barnett and Anthony Seigler prepare for the Texas League and Eastern League playoffs.


This week’s update also includes pro golf, college football, cross country, volleyball, soccer, tennis, and golf.



NFL


TREVOR LAWRENCE — Jacksonville Jaguars (NFL, 4th-yr. pro; Clemson; Cartersville HS) … was 14-for-30 passing for 220 yards with no interceptions but no touchdowns in an 18-13 home loss to the Cleveland Browns. Lawrence also rushed for 45 yards on two attempts. The Jaguars (0-2) play on Monday Night Football, September 23, at the Buffalo Bills.



MiLB



MASON BARNETT — Midland RockHounds (3rd-yr. pro; Oakland A’s Double-A affiliate; Texas League; Auburn; Cartersville HS) … went seven innings and collected his ninth win this season last Tuesday (Sept. 10) as the RockHounds won at Corpus Christi 3-0. The right hand pitcher struck out nine while scattering two hits and three walks in his shutout performance. Barnett is 9-8 this season in 26 appearances (25 starts) covering 133 innings. He has 161 strikeouts and a 4.20 ERA. Midland (84-54) hosts the Frisco RoughRiders on Tuesday night in Game 1 of the best-of-three Texas League Division Series. Game 2 will be at Frisco on Thursday and a third game (if needed) will be played on Friday night in Frisco.


ANTHONY SEIGLER — Somerset Patriots (7th-yr. pro; NY Yankees Double-A affiliate; Eastern League; Cartersville HS) … in the final series of the regular season at home against New Hampshire, the second baseman was 5-for-16 at the plate with two doubles, five walks, one hit-by-pitch, two sac flies, four RBI, six runs scored, and three stolen bases. Seigler hit for a .280 average in August and .286 in September to raise his season average to .234 in 364 official at-bats. He has 12 homers, 49 RBI, and an OBP of .350 with 29 stolen bases. Somerset hosts the Hartford Yard Goats on Tuesday in Game 1 of the best-of-three Eastern League Division Series.  Games 2 and 3 (if needed) will be at Hartford on Thursday and Friday.



PGA CHAMPIONS TOUR


JASON BOHN — Champions Senior Tour (Acworth, 51, 33-yr. pro; Cartersville CC member)  … shot 74-70-78—222 and placed 73rd this past weekend at the senior tour’s Sanford International held at Minnehaha Country Club in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Bohn is currently 121st in the season-long Schwab Cup standings. The next event on the tour is the PURE Insurance Championship on the Monterey Peninsula, California, where competitors will play Spyglass Hill and Pebble Beach Golf Links.



COLLEGE FOOTBALL


KOLBE BENHAM — Marist College (R-Jr., Cartersville HS) … made five tackles (three solo) in a 56-14 loss this past Saturday at Lafayette. The Red Foxes (0-2) visit Bucknell on Saturday night.


HAYDEN CAGLE — Berry College (Sr., Cartersville HS) … a starter on the Vikings’ offensive line in a 33-0 home loss to 25th-ranked DePauw University. Berry’s offense managed only 144 total yards and penetrated inside the Tigers’ 30-yard line thrice — missing a field goal and turning the ball over on downs twice. Berry (1-1) plays at Randolph-Macon College (VA) on Saturday afternoon.


JONAH GAMBILL — University of Memphis (R-Sr., Cartersville HS) … a starter on the Tigers’ offensive line that produced 337 yards of total offense Saturday in a 20-12 win at Florida State. Memphis (3-0) travels to Annapolis, Maryland on Saturday to play Navy.

KEVIN HENDERSON — University of Findlay (Fr., Cass HS) … saw action but did not record a stat line in the Oilers’ 42-30 win at Wayne State in Detroit. It was Henderson’s first collegiate appearance. Findlay (2-0) hosts Lake Erie on Saturday afternoon in the G-MAC league opener for both teams.


SHADRE HURST — Tulane University (So., Cartersville HS) … a two-year starter on the Green Wave’s offensive line that posted 279 total yards this past Saturday at 13th-ranked Oklahoma but dropped a 34-19 decision to the Sooners. Tulane (1-2) plays at Louisiana in Lafayette on Saturday.


MALACHI JEFFRIES — UT-Chattanooga (R-Fr., Cartersville HS) … did not have a stat line but saw action in the Mocs’ 10-3 loss at home this past Saturday to Mercer. Chattanooga (0-3, 0-1 Southern Conference) has a bye week before hosting Portland State on September 28.

QUANTE JENNINGS — Presbyterian College (Sr., Cartersville HS) … had seven carries for 59 yards and caught a pass for nine yards last Saturday as the Blue Hose blanked visiting Virginia-Lynchburg 52-0. Presbyterian (2-1) hosts Gardner-Webb on Saturday night.



TYLER MARTIN — Berry College (Jr., Cass HS) … a starting offensive lineman for a Vikings’ offense that managed just 144 total yards in a 33-0 home loss last Saturday to 25th-ranked DePauw University. Berry (1-1) plays at Randolph-Macon College (VA) on Saturday afternoon.


JAKE PARKER — Judson University (So., Cartersville HS) … completed 16 of 33 passes for 289 yards and three touchdowns this past Saturday in the Eagles’ 52-29 loss at Taylor University (IN). Parker added 51 yards rushing on six carries. Judson (1-1) travels to Difiance College (OH) on Saturday afternoon.


SAM PHILLIPS — UT-Chattanooga (R-Jr., Cartersville HS) … caught six passes for 81 yards this past Saturday in a 10-3 home loss to 23rd-ranked Mercer. The Mocs (0-3) have a bye week before hosting Portland State on September 28.

DEVONTE ROSS — Troy University (Jr., Cartersville HS) … had five receptions for 142 yards and two touchdowns this past Saturday in a 38-21 loss at Iowa, plus a 77-yard punt return for a touchdown. The Trojans (0-3) host Florida A&M on Saturday night.


STEPHEN ROWSER — Morehouse College (Fr., Cartersville HS) … had eight tackles, including 2-½ sacks with one forced fumble in the Maroon Tigers’ 35-21 loss to Howard University this past Saturday in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Morehouse (0-3, 0-1 SIAC) plays Kentucky State University on Saturday as part of the XXVI Chicago Football Classic at Soldier Field. 


EVAN SLOCUM — Wake Forest University (Sr., Cartersville HS) … made five tackles (four solo) this past Saturday in a 40-6 home loss to Ole Miss. The Demon Deacons have a bye week before hosting Louisiana on September 28.



CROSS COUNTRY


BILL ARCHER -- University of Montevallo (Sr., Cartersville HS) ... was 322nd (28:19) of 465 runners last Friday at the 8K Jacksonville State Southern Showcase in Huntsville. Montevallo was 30th of 47 teams. The Falcons run next on September 28 at the Michael Pretorius Invitational in Nashville.


DANIELLE THAYER — Augusta University (So., Woodland HS) … placed 90th of 121 runners as an individual in 25:16 at the Appalachian State University Fire Tower Project in Boone, North Carolina. Wake Forest won the team competition ahead of Appalachian State and Milligan. Augusta placed sixth of 11 teams. Next for the Jaguars is the Georgia College Bobcat Invitational on September 28.


TYLER JONES -- University of West Georgia (So., Woodland HS) ... finished 328th (28:28) of 465 runners in the 8K Jacksonville State Southern Showcase last Friday. Alabama won the team competition, with UWG placing 28th of 47 teams. The next meet for the Wolves is at Florida State University on October 12.



VOLLEYBALL


AILEE ENGLAND — Berry College (Fr., Cartersville HS) … had three kills, one service ace, seven digs, and one block in the Vikings’ three set home win this past Saturday over Piedmont, 25-5, 25-16, and 25-16. Berry (3-6, 1-0 Southern Athletic Association) hosts the Vikings Classic with Covenant College, Emory University, and Centre College (KY) on Friday and Saturday.


MAKAYLA MALONE — Toccoa Falls College (Fr., Excel Christian Academy) … saw action in one of three sets this past Saturday in a 3-0 loss to Lancaster Bible. The Screamin’ Eagles play at Warren Wilson College (KY) on Thursday night.


MADELYN ORTON — LaGrange College (Jr., Cartersville resident, Cornerstone Prep Academy) … totaled one kill and five digs while seeing action in seven sets of four losses last week to Clark Atlanta, Lynchburg, Randolph, and Greensboro. LaGrange (3-6) visits Point University on Wednesday and travels to Jackson, Mississippi, on Saturday to play host Belhaven University and Millsaps College.


MEREDITH ORTON — LaGrange College (Jr., Cartersville resident, Cornerstone Prep Academy) … in five match losses last week to Clark Atlanta, William Peace, Lynchburg, Randolph, and Greensboro, Orton had 12 kills, three aces, and 16 digs. The Panthers (3-6) visit Point University Wednesday night and travel to Jackson, Mississippi, Saturday to play Millsaps College and host Bellhaven University.



SOCCER


ABBEY CRAIG — Reinhardt University (Jr., Cartersville HS) … made two starts at forward as the Eagles beat Bryan College (TN) at home last Wednesday and lost Saturday at Columbia University (SC). Craig has one assist in the 3-0 win over Bryan. Reinhardt (2-3, 2-1 Appalachian Athletic Conference) plays at Columbia International University (SC) on Wednesday afternoon.



TENNIS


BRYCE VAN ORDER — Piedmont University (Grad student, Woodland HS) … lost his Line 3 singles match, 5-7, 2-6, and lost his Line 3 doubles match with partner Charles Parnell, 3-6 in a 2-5 team loss last Friday to Berry College. On Saturday, Van Order won his Line 3 singles match 6-2, 3-6, 10-7 and lost 3-6 at Line 3 doubles with partner Leyton Dunn in the Lions’ 5-2 victory over Shorter University in Rome. Piedmont (1-1) will participate in the Rome ITA Regionals September 26-29.



GOLF


TYLER STEWARD — Hesston College (Fr., Adairsville HS) … placed 49th individually with rounds of 95-87-84 as Hesston finished sixth of ten teams at the Carmichael Cup last Monday and Tuesday (Sept. 9-10) in Salina, Kansas. Sterling College won the tournament. Hesston plays next at the Central Kansas Classic in McPherson, Kansas, on Monday and Tuesday, September 16-17.

CHRISTINA SURCEY — Florida State University (Fr., Cartersville resident, N. Cobb Christian) … tied for 64th individually carding rounds of 81-82-76 at her first collegiate event, The Folds of Honor Collegiate last Monday-Wednesday, September 9-11 at American Dunes Golf Club in Grand Haven, Michigan. The Seminoles placed second, four shots behind champion Arizona. Ohio State, Texas, and Baylor rounded out the top five teams at the 15-team event. Florida State plays this Saturday through Monday at the Schooner Fall Classic hosted by Oklahoma University at Belmar Golf Club in Norman.

BRODY TIDWELL — Georgia State University (So., Cartersville HS) … tied for 21st individually with rounds of 73-73-69 at the Southern Dunes Invitational held last Monday-Tuesday, September 9-10 at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club in Maricopa, Arizona. Georgia State was sixth of eight teams, with host USC winning by seven shots over Grand Canyon University.
