This week's high school football games at a glance

It's the final week of the 2019 high school football regular season. Here's a quick snapshot of this week's games for the local teams.

CARTERSVILLE HURRICANES (9-0, 5-0) at TROUP TIGERS (6-3, 3-2)

The Hurricanes have already clinched the 2019 Region 5-AAAA championship and will host a first round state playoff game next November 15 at Weinman Stadium. First, Cartersville must wrap up the regular season against likely playoff bound Troup. (A Chapel Hill upset of Cedartown Friday night in Polk County could create a three-way tie for the final two playoff spots.) The Purple Hurricanes have won all five games in this series including last season’s 43-10 win at home.

ADAIRSVILLE TIGERS (5-5, 4-4) are idle

The Tigers enjoy a bye week and a waiting game regarding the Class AAA state playoffs. Adairsville is in line for the classification’s “At Large” berth as the top fifth place team in any of the other regions.

The Tigers have a 10.20 power rating in the GHSA system which is ahead of all the other regions’ fifth place teams and well ahead of fourth place Worth County of Region 1-AAA who will not qualify since the region only has four teams.

Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe could throw a wrinkle in the power rating scenario for Adairsville with a win Friday night at Calhoun. That would leap-frog LFO to fourth and drop Sonoraville to fifth. The Phoenix currently have a 10.80 power rating and beat Adairsville head-to-head. Sonoraville plays at region-leader North Murray Friday night.

KELL LONGHORNS (7-2, 5-2) at WOODLAND WILDCATS (1-8, 0-7)

The Wildcats will wrap up their 2019 campaign Friday night at home with the difficult task of trying to snap an eight-game losing skid against the 10th-ranked Longhorns. Kell, who has locked up a No. 3-seed from Region 7-AAAAA, is ranked No. 10 in the classification and only has losses to the top two teams in the region — Carrollton and Rome.

Woodland will recognize their seniors.

CASS COLONELS (3-6, 2-5) at PAULDING COUNTY (3-6, 2-5)

The Colonels and Patriots will battle in Dallas as both teams seek a fourth win on the season. Cass has suffered five straight losses and is coming off a late-season bye week. Paulding is looking to snap a four-game losing streak including last week’s 48-14 loss at Carrollton. The Patriots lead the series 17-4 under the moniker of Paulding County. Cass was 5-0 against the formerly named Dallas High School between 1954 and 1961.

Paulding has won six in a row in the series including last year’s 17-14 victory at “The Doug.” In all, the Patriots have won 15 of the last 16 against the Colonels.
