Woodland girls advance to state


The Woodland girls tennis team qualified for the Class AAAAA state tournament with a 3-0 Region 7-AAAAA quarterfinal win Wednesday over Rome. The Lady Cats lost in the semifinals to Carrollton, but will play Hiram Thursday afternoon at 2 p.m. to determine the No. 3 and 4 seeds for the state playoffs.


In the win over Rome, Breanna Shook won her Line 1 singles match 6-2, 6-3. Becky Wesley won at Line 2 singles, 6-2, 7-5, and the Line 1 doubles tandem of Emma Savage and Eryn Gentry came-from-behind in three sets to win 4-6, 6-0, 6-1.


The Woodland boys were eliminated in the region quarterfinals Wednesday.


Bryce VanOrder won 6-1, 6-0 and Connor Gunnell won 6-0, 6-1 at Line 1 and Line 2 singles, but Hiram took the match by a 3-2 team score.
