Shaw, Archer, Martin provide Cartersville top finishes at River Ridge Invite
The Cartersville High School track and field teams competed Saturday at the River Ridge High School Invitational in Woodstock. Although the Lady Canes fielded a partial team in the event, Jacksonville State University commit London Shaw continued her string of top performances in the shot put and discus throw. Shaw won both events at the 11-team invitational with a shot put distance of 35 feet, 10 and 1/2 inches and a discus throw of 102 feet, 4 and 1/2 inches. Fellow Lady Cane Demya Bryan was a fourth place finisher in the 100 meters with a time of 13.67.
In boys action, Bill Archer won the 800 meter event with a 2:09.87 mark. He was also fifth in the 1600 meter run in 4:50.22. Jadon Martin (photo) took second place in the high jump with a mark of 5 feet, six inches. Nick Bebko (12 feet) and Jack Merritt (10 feet) placed third and fifth, respectively, in pole vault. Daniel Ejieke (16.77) finished third in the 110 meter hurdles. Michael Abernathy (101 feet, 9 and 1/2 inches) had a fourth place finish in the discus throw. Colin McCann (10:50.74) placed fifth in the 3200 meter run and Max Florence (2:14.06) had a sixth place finish in the 800 meters. The distance medley team of McCann, Ejieke, Sim Archer, and Parker Breedlove came away with a fifth place result in 12:08.08. Next for the Hurricanes will be a home meet at Weinman Stadium Thursday at 4:30 for a tri-meet with Dalton and Pickens County.
