Cartersville teams sweep Chapel Hill; Cass girls win at Hiram
The Cartersville girls and boys basketball teams celebrated their senior night Wednesday night at The Storm Center with Region 5-AAAA wins over Chapel Hill, while the Cass girls picked up a valuable road win in Region 7-AAAAA.
CARTERSVILLE GIRLS 43, CHAPEL HILL 31
On senior night at The Storm Center, the Lady Canes won a Region 5-AAAA matchup with Chapel Hill, 43-31. Seniors A’mya Davis and London Shaw (photo) led Cartersville with 11 and eight points, respectively. Classmate Emily Petty also saw significant playing time. The loss dropped the visiting Lady Panthers to 7-16 for the season and 1-10 in region action.
Cartersville (11-12, 3–8) closes out the regular season Saturday afternoon at Troup at 3:30 p.m.
CARTERSVILLE BOYS 79, CHAPEL HILL 75
Perignon Dyer poured in 29 points while Kolbe Benham and Isaac Gridley each scored 15 as the Purple Hurricanes beat Chapel Hill 79-75.
Gridley (photo) also added 16 rebounds to complete a double-double performance.
Cartersville took a 23-15 lead after one quarter, led 41-27 at halftime, and held a 59-48 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
Rounding out the Canes’ scoring were Micah Tart with seven points. Marquail Coaxum scored five. Austin Cauffman and Raylin Royal had three apiece, and Taywuan Johnson added two points. Dyer was credited with four steals and Cauffman drew three charges in the Canes’ defensive effort.
Mike Bell paced the visiting Panthers with 18 points. K.J. Doucet and Ju’Quan Williams added 12 points each for Chapel Hill (11-11, 4-7).
Cartersville (13-11, 7-4) can secure the 2-seed in Region 5-AAAA with a regular season finale’ win Saturday at Troup at 5 p.m.
CASS GIRLS 63, HIRAM 45
The Cass girls wrapped up their regular season slate Wednesday night at Hiram with a convincing 63-45 Region 7-AAAAA win. The Lady Colonels sprinted to a 17-3 lead after one quarter, led 34-15 at halftime, and were up 46-30 after three quarters on their way to an 18-point win. Amber Brittian (photo) led Cass with 16 points. Londaisha Smith scored 12 and Sharia Wade knocked down 11 points. Payton Stoddard and Alexis Ware had eight points each. Claire Davis finished with five and Ariana Hames added three points.
Sydney Jones led Hiram with 16 points. Imani Smith scored 10 for the Lady Hornets (12-13, 7-8).
Cass (20-5, 11-5) will finish in a third-place tie in Region 7-AAAAA with Rome if the Wolves win Friday at Hiram. A tie would force a coin toss to determine the 3-seed and 4-seed for the region tournament. If Cass is the 3-seed, the Lady Colonels will play Tuesday at Carrollton against either Hiram or Kell. If they become the 4-seed, Cass will play Tuesday at Villa Rica against either Hiram or Kell.
HIRAM 61, CASS BOYS 58
The Colonels suffered a tough, three-point road loss at Hiram Wednesday night in their regular season finale’ falling 61-58. Cass had a potential game-tying three-point shot to miss at the buzzer. “We didn’t shoot it well,” said Cass coach Sean Glaze. “It also wasn’t our best effort defensively. We have some work to do before next Tuesday.”
The game stayed close throughout and was tied at 14 at the end of one quarter. Hiram led 33-27 at halftime and was up 46-42 heading into the final period.
Nate Presnell, the Hornets’ 6-9 senior forward led all scorers with 26 points. Javyen Brown added 14 for Hiram. Jacquez Fountain paced Cass with 21 points. Justice Hayes (photo) and Ethan Carter followed with 13 points each. Jordan Ford tossed in four. Braxton Benham finished with three and Jaylon Johnson added two points for the Colonels.
Hiram improved to 9-15 overall and 4-11 in Region 7-AAAAA. Cass finished its regular season slate with a 13-12 mark and is 8-8 in region play. The Colonels are locked into the 5-seed for the Region 7-AAAAA tournament and will play 4th-seeded Rome next Tuesday at Kell High School at 6 p.m. The winner will not only reach the region tournament semifinals, but will earn a berth in the state tournament.
