Athletes Beyond Bartow update
Updates for college and pro athletes representing Cartersville and Bartow County for the week ending Sunday, January 27.
COLLEGE BASKETBALL
MARK CHESTER — Georgia Northwestern Tech CC (Fr., G, Cass HS)… scored seven points with nine rebounds and six assists Friday night during a 98-83 win over Crowley’s Ridge College (AR) at the Flames Invitational in Gallatin, TN. He also scored six points Saturday in a 104-83 loss to Welch College (TN) at the same event. Last Tuesday, Chester scored 11 points and grabbed six rebounds in a 94-77 loss to Campbellsville University-Somerset (KY). Georgia Northwestern plays at Bryan College JV Monday night and travels to Hiwassee College JV Wednesday night.
RYAN DAVIS — Francis Marion University (Sr., G, Cartersville HS)… scored eight points with four rebounds, three assists, and two steals Saturday in an 80-76 Peach Belt Conference win at Flagler College. He also knocked down13 points with five rebounds, three assists, and two steals in an 81-76 home loss last Wednesday against Augusta University. Last Monday, Davis scored 11 points with five rebounds, one assist, and two steals in a 76-60 home win over Columbus State. The Patriots (13-3, 9-2) are currently tied for second in the PBC and travel to conference-leading UNC Pembroke Wednesday night before hosting Georgia College Saturday afternoon.
ASHTON HAGANS — University of Kentucky (Fr., G, Cartersville native, Newton Co. HS)… scored five points, had nine assists, grabbed two rebounds, and made two steals Tuesday in a 76-55 home win over 22nd-ranked Mississippi State. He added 12 points with eight assists and two rebounds Saturday in a 71-63 win over 9th-ranked Kansas at Rupp Arena. 8th-ranked Kentucky (16-3, 5-1) has now won six straight and plays SEC games this week at Vanderbilt Tuesday night and at Florida Saturday.
WHITNEY HARRIS — Toccoa Falls College (Fr., G, Woodland HS)… scored 14 points with seven rebounds, five assists, one block, and one steal in an 83-78 overtime loss at Trinity Baptist College (FL) Saturday. Friday, she scored 10 points, had five assists, two steals, and four rebounds in an 83-55 loss at Pensacola Christian College. Harris added six points, grabbed three rebounds, and had one assist in an 86-54 loss at Bob Jones University (SC) last Tuesday.
CARTER HEDDEN — Hocking CC (Fr., G, Cass HS)… returning from an injury that had him sidelined for about six weeks, Hedden played six minutes and had two assists and one steal in a 79-68 home loss to Columbus State CC (OH) last Wednesday. He scored six points on a pair of three-pointers with one assist Saturday in an 89-74 loss at Lorain County CC.
KIMORA McCLINIC — Middle Georgia State University (So., G, Cartersville HS)… in three games this past week, she totaled 10 points, two rebounds, and one steal as the Knights won at Faulkner University (AL), but lost at Blue Mountain College (MS) and Bethel University (TN). MGSU (7-12, 3-9 Southern State Athletic Conference) hosts Martin Methodist (TN) Thursday evening.
JANA MORNING — Berry College (So., G, Cass HS)… Morning was named Southern Athletic Association player of the week last week as she scored 20 points with seven rebounds, two assists, and two steals Sunday in a 57-47 home win over Rhodes College. She also had 12 points, seven rebounds, seven assists, and a pair of steals Friday night in a home win over Hendrix College. The Vikings have now won five straight in the conference and tied their program mark since joining the league. Berry (9-11, 5-4) hosts Millsaps College Friday and Birmingham Southern College Sunday.
JONATHAN PRITCHETT — Vermont Tech CC (So., G, Woodland HS)… scored five points with one assist and one steal Saturday in an 85-71 win at Maine-Machias CC. He added six points, two assists, and one rebound last Tuesday during an 88-73 loss at New Hampshire Tech. VTCC (17-7, 10-3) has Yankee Small College Conference games at Hampshire CC Wednesday night, at home Saturday against Southern Maine CC, and Sunday at Paul Smith’s College.
JAYLON PUGH — Furman University (Fr., G, Cartersville HS)… had one rebound in a brief appearance Thursday as part of a 73-58 home win over Chattanooga. The Paladins also had a 75-73 home loss Saturday to Samford. Furman (16-5, 5-4 Southern Conference) plays at The Citadel Thursday night and at Mercer Saturday.
JOSIE SUMMERVILLE — North Park University (Fr., F, Adairsville HS)… scored eight points with seven rebounds and two steals last Wednesday during a 97-52 loss at Illinois Wesleyan. She then scored six points, collected 14 rebounds, had one blocked shot, and two steals in a 67-53 home loss to North Central University. NPU (7-13, 3-8 CCIW) hosts Carroll University Wednesday night before traveling to Augustana College (IL) Saturday.
DARIUS THROWER — Truett McConnell University (Jr., G, Excel Christian Academy)… had 12 points and two assists Saturday in a 95-88 loss at Bluefield College (VA). He also had three points, one assist, and one steal last Tuesday during a 102-91 loss at 24th-ranked Montreat College (NC). TMU (11-11, 6-10 Appalachian Athletic Conference) hosts Milligan College (TN) Tuesday night and Point University Thursday evening.
CARROD WATSON — University of North Georgia (R-Jr., F, Woodland HS)… grabbed a pair of defensive boards in two minutes of playing time Saturday during a 92-82 Peach Belt Conference loss at Georgia College. UNG (7-10, 2-9) travels to Lander University (SC) Wednesday night before hosting Georgia Southwestern State Saturday afternoon.
PRO BASKETBALL
A.J. MORNING — Northern Arizona Suns (1st-yr. pro; NBA G-League; Alcorn State; Cartersville HS)… was waived by the Suns this week after appearing in seven games this season. He averaged 2.9 points, one rebound, one assist, and 0.6 steals.
ELIJAH ROBINSON — Villa San Martin (1st-yr. pro; Argentine League; Emmanuel College; Excel Christian Academy)… scored 21 points, collected six rebounds, and added one assist with one steal in an 80-77 win Saturday over Obera Tennis Club. He also scored 10 points with four rebounds, four assists, and a steal in an 87-74 loss at Independiente Santiago del Estero Wednesday.
COLLEGE TENNIS
PEYTON GOLLHOFER — Ball State University (Sr., Cartersville, GA, Laurel Springs Academy)… won her singles and doubles matches Saturday as the Cardinals won at Northern Kentucky University 4-3. Gollhofer beat Katja Dijanezevic 6-3, 6-0 at Line 4 singles and teamed with Isabelle Dohanics to win at Line 3 doubles 6-1. She also picked up her team’s only win Friday in a 6-1 loss at the University of Louisville. Gollhofer won her Line 4 singles match over Diana Wong 6-4, 6-3 but she and Dohanics lost their Line 3 doubles match, 6-0. Ball State (2-1) hosts Youngstown State University Saturday afternoon.
COLLEGE WRESTLING
JONATHAN DE LA CRUZ — Life University (Fr., 184 wt. class; Cartersville HS)…finished 2-2 and placed fourth Saturday at the University of the Cumberlands Invitational. Both wins — over Daniel Novak (U of C) and Antonio Mariscal (Unattached) came in the consolation round. The Runnin’ Eagles return to the mat Tuesday night at Lindsey Wilson College (KY) and will wrestle Saturday at University of the Cumberlands (KY).
ROBBY EARICK — Life University (Fr., 141 wt. class; Cartersville HS)… went 1-2 in the Gray Division of the U of C Invitational Saturday. His win came in the consolation bracket over Life teammate Ardarius Pruitt. Life hits the mats again Tuesday night at Lindsey Wilson College (KY) and will compete Saturday in a dual match at University of the Cumberlands (KY).
JAKE HUFFINE — UT-Chattanooga (Jr., Woodland HS)… lost his 133-pound match Sunday afternoon to Kyle Gorant, 8-2, but the Mocs defeated the Davidson Wildcats 34-9 to remain unbeaten in the Southern Conference at 2-0. Huffine is 16-9 this season combined in duals and tournaments. Chattanooga is 4-5 overall in dual matches this season and will travel to Gardner-Webb Friday night and Appalachian State Sunday.
TRACK AND FIELD
ANNA HIGHTOWER — Georgia Tech (Sr., Cartersville HS)… the Yellow Jackets’ pole vaulter placed 15th at the Clemson University Bob Pollack Invitational. Hightower cleared 11 feet, 5 and 3/4 inches. Next for Georgia Tech is the University of Michigan Invitational this Friday and Saturday.
TREVOR KNOWLES — Albion College (So., Woodland HS)… placed second in both the triple jump and high jump Saturday as his team finished third at the six-team Baldwin Wallace University Team Challenge. Knowles’ high jump cleared 1.95 meters and his triple jump was 13.24 meters. The next meet for the Britons will be Saturday at the Indiana Wesleyan University Midwest Classic in Marion, Indiana.
