Woodland reaches state finals
The Woodland wrestling team continued an impressive run through the State Team Duals Championship Friday night and reached Saturday’s title match with a 45-15 win over Veterans. The top-seeded Wildcats have won easily in each of their three matches prior to the finals, defeating Arabia Mountain 82-0, Ware County 70-6, and Veterans by 30 points. Woodland will face Buford for the Class 5A championship Saturday at 3 p.m. at the Macon Centreplex. Buford defeated Cass Friday night 50-24 to reach the finals. Buford, the No. 2 seed, beat Statesboro in the first round 64-18 and Harris County in the quarterfinals 56-15. Cass drops to the consolation bracket where the Colonels could finish as high as third place.
Cass will wrestle Ola Saturday morning in the wrestleback semifinals. The winner of that match will face the Veterans/Locust Grove winner for third place. Cartersville finished 2-2 in the Class 4A state tournament.
The Canes had an opening round win Thursday over Columbus 42-31, but lost to Woodward Academy in the second round 56-18. Friday Cartersville won its first match in the consolation bracket over Cairo 59-24, but was eliminated Friday night with a 43-27 loss to Blessed Trinity.
