Cartersville 12U all-stars win second straight state championship
The Cartersville Parks and Recreation Department 12U all-star football team defeated the Savannah Hurricanes 12-6 Sunday afternoon to win a second straight Georgia Recreation and Parks Association (GRPA) Class A 12U state championship.
The state playoffs were held Saturday and Sunday at Felker Park in Walton County.
Cartersville defeated Walton County West 42-0 Saturday afternoon to earn a spot in the finals. Savannah beat Walton County Central 36-0 in their semifinal game.
In Sunday’s victory, Khristian Lando rushed for 170 total yards and two touchdowns to provide much of the Cartersville offense. Stephen Rowser rushed for 55 yards including a trio of important third down conversions throughout the day.
Receivers Brayden Pope and Asa Shepard both hauled in key receptions from quarterback Brelace Williams during the game.
The Cartersville defense was led by Isaiah Livsey who forced one of the Savannah fumbles and finished with 14 total tackles.
Although Cartersville allowed a touchdown on Savannah’s first play of the game, the defense rallied to keep them off the scoreboard for the remainder of the game.
In all, the Cartersville defense forced five fumbles that resulted in three turnovers. Trevor Harris added an interception for the locals.
Logan Shrewsbury was credited with making multiple key defensive plays, and Lando finished with nine tackles and a fumble recovery for Cartersville.
The Cartersville special teams were also credited with a shining effort throughout the title game.
The Cartersville 12U all-star roster includes: Samuel Bernstein, Jimmy Channell, Jayden Curtis, Robert Dellaporta, Cole Dumas, James Echols, Jeremiah Glenn, Trevor Harris, Landen Heath, Khristian Lando, Isaiah Livsey, Baylon Long, Brodie McWhorter, Cooper Moon, Kenneth Morris, Brayden Pope, Jakeveon Porter, Kendrick Price, Stephen Rowser, Asa Shepard, Logan Shrewsbury, Luke Surrett, Brelace Williams, Tre’shaun Winters, and Logan Woods. Coaches: Adam Williams, Brett Williams, Sid Rowser, Kendale McAfee, and Lee Miles.
In the GRPA 10U Class A state championship game, Cartersville was blanked by the Savannah Stars 19-0.
Savannah took a 7-0 lead in the first half, added a 10-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter, and scored on a fourth quarter, eight-yard run for their points total.
Reed Ezell led the Cartersville offense with 50 rushing yards and a completed pass to Asa Mitcham. Hagen Sharp added three carries for eight total yards for Cartersville.
Mitcham played a key role for Cartersville in defending the Savannah running game. Ezell also chased down two other potential scoring runs.
Cartersville 10U reached the state title game by defeating Walton County Central, 36-6 on Saturday. Savannah Stars won their semifinal game 34-0 over Walton County West.
