Wildcats open campaign with home win; Lady Cats drop opener



The Woodland basketball teams opened the 2018-19 season Friday night at home by splitting a pair of games with Gordon Central.


The Wildcats defeated the visiting Warriors 60-38. The Lady Cats fell 63-29.

 

WOODLAND BOYS 60, GORDON CENTRAL 38


The Wildcats got their 2018-19 season started on the right foot Friday night at home with a 60-37 win over Gordon Central.


Woodland led 12-7 after one quarter and 24-17 at halftime before taking a 38-23 lead after three quarters.


Jaylen Ballard and Hunter Johnson led the Wildcats’ scoring with 24 and 20 points, respectively. They were followed by Kyjuan McLendon and Dawson Wilkins with four points each. Nathan Gomez and Justice Carter added three points. DiAnthony Heathcock scored two points, while D.J. Robinson and Peyton Roberts added one point each.


Kade Steward led Gordon Central (0-1) with 13 points. Lee Mabe and Christian Manjez added eight apiece for the Warriors.


Woodland (1-0) opens play at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in the Paulding Patriots Hoopsgiving Classic against Whitefield Academy at Paulding County High School.



GORDON CENTRAL 63, WOODLAND GIRLS 29


The visiting Lady Warriors ran out to a 19-7 lead after one quarter and led 34-18 at halftime on their way to a 63-29 opening night win at Woodland.


Mercedes Coleman led Gordon Central (1-0) with 16 points. Cara Crump scored 12 and Tayla Gunn added nine for the Warriors.


Madgie Robinson and Lauren Morris score seven each for the Lady Cats. Jordan Thompson added four points. Nickiah Metcalf scored three. Morgan Bailey, Morgan Cooper, Abigail Taylor, and Gracie Styles contributed two points each.


Woodland (0-1) plays Adairsville Monday at 5:30 p.m. in the opening round of the Armuchee Thanksgiving Tournament in Rome.
