Seven Lady Canes recognized as All-Region 5-AAAA softball teams named


Seven Cartersville softball players were named to the All-Region 5-AAAA team released earlier this week.

The team was selected by the region's coaches and included a first, team, second team, and honorable-mention list.


Sophomore outfielder Anna Kate McElhaney was named to the first team with a .378 batting average in region play. Her on-base percentage tied for first with teammate Colbi Ballard at .410.


Ballard, a senior pitcher, and junior catcher Lauren McElhaney landed on the second team. Senior Presley Edwards, sophomore Mattie Johnson, and juniors Cio Seigler and Hope Short were named honorable-mention.

Ballard finished with a 4-6 win-loss record in the circle during region play. She hit for a .371 batting average with a .410 on-base percentage and .486 slugging percentage. She added 12 RBIs.

Lauren McElhaney hit .306 and led the team in walks against region opponents. She was also recognized for her defensive play behind the plate.

As designated player, Edwards hit to a triple-slash line of .278/.297/.444. She had three doubles and a homer. Johnson, also recognized for her defensive play finished region play with no errors. Seigler scored 10 runs and had six RBIs. Short had a double, triple and a home run with four RBIs and six runs scored.
