Eight local players named to All-Region 7-AAAAA softball teams; Woodland's Roberts named Region
With the Woodland Lady Cats winning their first-ever region title, coach Colman Roberts was honored by his fellow region coaches at the 2018 Region 7-AAAAA Coach of the Year. There were also eight Bartow County players from Woodland and Cass named to either the All-Region First Team, Second Team, or selected as Gold Glove recipients.
Bella Carnes and Jordan Duck of Woodland along with Rachel Lee of Cass were named to the All-Region 7-AAAAA First Team in a recent release by region coaches.
The three Bartow County players join Scout Jennings, Montana Dallas, and Olivia Fannin of Carrollton; Alyssa Salois, Adalyn Heal, and Kyra Lightner of East Paulding; Kayla Hurley and Madi Langford of Villa Rica; and Kyleigh Haney of Hiram on the First Team.
In region games, Carnes hit for a .455 batting average and had a .492 on-base percentage with a .618 slugging percentage. She had six extra-base hits with 11 RBI and scored a dozen runs. Carnes was a perfect five-for-five in stolen base attempts.
Duck in region action, hit for a .411 batting average and had a .431 on-base average. She added a .446 slugging percentage with a pair of doubles, 13 RBI, and 14 runs scored.
Lee hit .447 in Region 7-AAAAA games with a .500 on-base average and .596 slugging percentage. She had seven doubles and 15 RBI. Lee stole three bases on three attempts.
Ansley Evans, Caroline Higdon, and Kendyl Hardin of Woodland were named to the All-Region Second Team along with Erin Lee of Cass.
Evans (top left) hit .381 in region contests with three extra-base hits and 5 RBI. Her on-base average was .400 and her slugging percentage was .444 with five stolen bases.
Higdon (top right) hit for a .418 average in region games with a home run and 15 RBI. Her on-base average was .450 with a slugging percentage of .545.
Hardin (bottom left) finished the region schedule with a .426 batting average. She blasted five home runs and had 14 RBI. Her on-base percentage was .508 with a slugging percentage of .809. She swiped three bags.
Lee (bottom right) hit .319 in region games with a home run and eight RBI. Her on-base average was .418 and slugging percentage was .404. The speedster was successful on 14 of 15 stolen base attempts.
Woodland first baseman Morgan Bailey, second baseman Carnes, and outfielder Higdon were named to the All-Region Gold Glove Team for their defense.
Bailey had a .970 fielding percentage in 101 total chances, Carnes was at .960 (69 total chances) and Higdon was at .970 (36 total chances). The Wildcats added four players on the honorable mention list with outfielder Morgan Cooper, catcher Skylar Chappell, and pitchers Sarah Baynard and Madi Bentley.
