Baseball roundup: Adairsville rallies past Calhoun, Woodland earns series split with Rome
The Adairsville Tigers rallied for three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning Wednesday evening for a come-from-behind 4-2 win over visiting Class AAA 10th-ranked Calhoun.
Calhoun took a 2-0 lead in the first inning and Adairsville cut that lead in half with a run in the second inning. The score remained 2-1 until the Tigers’ half of the sixth.
Kyler Pelfrey got the Tigers’ decisive inning started with a one-out triple. He later scored on a RBI single by Hunter Hice to tie the game 2-2. Garrett Mishoe followed with a double and he and Hice eventually scored on passed balls for a 4-2 lead.
Caden Gibbs (6.1 IP, 2R, 0ER, 4H, 0BB, 5K) earned the pitching victory by working into the seventh inning. Pelfrey earned a save by retiring the final two outs.
Matthew Williams led Calhoun’s offense with two hits and two RBI.
Mishoe had two hits for Adairsville with one RBI. Landon Ayers (RBI), BJ Roper, Trace Still, Hice (RBI), Gibbs, and Pelfrey had the other Tigers’ hits.
The loss dropped Calhoun to 11-6 overall and 4-4 in Region 6-AAA.
Adairsville (12-6, 5-3) plays a region game at Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe Friday at 5:55 p.m.
WOODLAND 7, ROME 1
After dropping a one-run decision to Rome Monday, the Woodland Wildcats started strong and supported a solid pitching performance by Koby Stansel to earn a split with the Wolves and even their season and Region 7-AAAAA marks with a 7-1 win Wednesday night.
Woodland scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 3-1 lead and added four more in the fifth inning.
Stansel scattered four hits and two walks in his complete-game win. He fanned three and the Wolves’ only run was unearned.
Bailey Ward (2 RBI), Chris Mills (2 RBI), Garrett Cornett, and Stansel had two hits each for Woodland. Marco Haro (3 RBI), Dylan Webb, and Toby Queen added one hit apiece.
With the loss, Rome falls to 9-8 overall and 4-2 in Region 7-AAAAA.
Woodland (10-10, 3-3) travels to Villa Rica Friday and will host Villa Rica on Monday. Both games are scheduled for 5:55 p.m. starts.
CARROLLTON 9, CASS 2
Class 5A 3rd-ranked Carrollton raced to a 7-0 lead through five innings Wednesday night and defeated visiting Cass 9-2.
The Colonels committed five errors in the game making six of the Trojans’ runs unearned.
Rhett Daniel (4.2 IP, 0R, 7H, 2BB, 7K) earned the pitching won for Carrollton by working into the fifth inning. Ryan Anderson (1.1 IP, 1ER, 1H, 1BB) and Brock Britton (1 IP, 1ER, 2H, 1BB, 1K) closed out the game for the Trojans.
Steven Spell (3 IP, 6R, 1ER, 0BB) started on the mound for Cass and took the loss. Blaine Ingram (2 IP, 1R, 0ER, 3BB, 2K) and Thomas Botts (1 IP, 2ER, 1H, 1BB) pitched in relief.
Destine Udombon and Charlie Lanier helped lead Carrollton with two hits and two RBI each. Jared Aldridge and Chris Gaiter also had two hits.
Nathan Smith went 3-for-3 for Cass in the loss. Matt Shook and Logan Nelson added two hits apiece. Clay Means, Austin Baker, and Bryson Markley had one hit each.
Carrollton improved to 19-3 overall and 9-0 in Region 7-AAAAA.
Cass (9-12, 3-6) will look to bounce back at home Friday against Rome at 5:55 p.m. and will travel to Class AA 2nd-ranked Rockmart Saturday.
