Colonels win at Villa Rica; Woodland falls to visiting East Paulding

Cass baseball broke open a close game with a five-run fifth inning Wednesday evening at Villa Rica to defeat the Wildcats 8-2 in Region 7-AAAAA action.


Cass led 3-1 through four innings before the fifth inning scoring eruption.


Cass took advantage of a walk and two hit batsmen to set up a two-run single by Evan Hinton that extended the Colonels’ lead to 5-1. Two wild pitches and another walk preceded an RBI single by Thomas Botts and the Cass lead was 8-1 heading to the bottom of the fifth.


Blaine Ingram drove in a third inning run with a double to give Cass a 1-0 lead. Nathan Smith put Cass up 3-0 with a two-run double in the fourth.


Two walks and a single by Bryson Smith gave the Wildcats their first run in the fourth inning.They added a seventh inning run when Trevor Murphy doubled.


Murphey and Johnny Bravy led the Villa Rica offense with two hits each.


Noah Best (4.1 IP, 7R, 6ER, 5H, 2BB, 6K) was tagged with the pitching loss for the Wildcats. Bravy and Murphy pitched in relief for Villa Rica.


Evan Hinton (6 IP, 1ER, 4H, 4BB, 8K) earned the pitching win for the Colonels. Nic Walllin (1 IP, 1ER, 2H, 2BB, 3K) closed out the final frame.


Hinton and Smith (double, RBI) led Cass with two hits apiece. Smith (double, 2 RBI), Steven Spell and Ingram (double, RBI) contributed one hit each for the Colonels.


Following the loss, Villa Rica is 8-10 overall and 1-4 in region play.


Cass (8-8, 2-2) evened its overall and region marks with the road win. The Colonels host county rival Woodland Thursday at 5:55 p.m. and Villa Rica Friday at 5:55 p.m.

EAST PAULDING 11, WOODLAND 1


East Paulding pitcher Jacob Cook tossed a complete game, scattered five hits and allowed only one earned run with a walk and five strikeouts as the visiting Raiders defeated Woodland 11-1 in six innings Wednesday night.


Cook blanked the Wildcats through the first four innings before allowing the lone Woodland run in the bottom of the fifth inning on an RBI single by Dylan Webb.


The Raiders’ senior was also a major contributor at the plate where he went 3-for-4 with four RBI. Andrew Pendleton had two hits and four RBI. Seth Grenon drove in a run with two hits. Jackson Phipps finished with two hits including a double while Brandon Haston doubled twice for East Paulding.


Woodland pitcher Ben Ammons (4 IP, 7R, 3ER, 9H, 0BB, 2K) suffered the loss on the mound. Seth McGill (2 IP, 4ER, 5H) pitched the fifth and sixth innings for the Wildcats.


Five different Wildcats had one hit each including Garrett Cornett, Koby Stansel, Chris Mills, Marco Haro, and Dylan Webb.


East Paulding improved to 4-11 overall and 1-2 in Region 7-AAAAA with the victory. Woodland (8-8, 1-1) plays region games at Cass Thursday at 5:55 p.m. and at East Paulding Friday at 5:55 p.m.
