Colonels win region opener
The Cass baseball team fell behind 3-0 in the top of the third inning Monday evening at LakePoint in Emerson but the Colonels responded with nine unanswered runs for a 9-3 Region 7-AAAAA win over Hiram.
Evan Hinton (6.2 IP, 3R, 1ER, 11H, 0BB, 5K) earned the pitching win for Cass by working into the seventh inning. Wyatt Karlovich closed out the final inning by striking out the only batter he faced.
Cass scored three runs in the bottom of the third inning to knot the game 3-3. Gavin Young walked and Matt Shook, Bryson Markley, Steven Spell, and Clay Means singled in the inning.
The Colonels took a 7-3 lead in the bottom of the fourth with four more runs.
Hinton led off the fourth inning with a triple and scored on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Young. Shook and Markley walked in front of a two RBI single by Nathan Smith. After Means walked to load the bases, Logan Nelson walked to drive home Markley for a four-run Cass lead.
The Colonels added their final two runs in the sixth on a Spell walk, a Means triple, and an RBI single by Hinton.
Means finished with a pair of hits and three RBI. Hinton also had two hits and one RBI. Smith (2 RBI), Markley, Spell (RBI), and Shook had one hit each. Young and Logan Nelson contributed one RBI each.
Cass (7-6, 1-0) travels to Hiram (3-8, 0-1) to complete the two game region series Wednesday.
