Woodland builds big lead early, holds off Sonoraville late

The Woodland baseball team built an 8-0 lead through five innings Saturday at home and then held off a late charge by Sonoraville for an 8-6 non-region win.


Ben Ammons earned the pitching victory for the Wildcats with another outstanding start. Bryce Evans retired the final three outs as Woodland survived the Sonoraville threat.


Chase Kirby had three hits including two doubles for the Phoenix and Tyler Lyles hit a solo homer in the sixth for Sonoraville’s first run.


Ammons finished with a hit and three RBI for the Wildcats. Dylan Webb had two hits and two RBI. Toby Queen and Jordan Lee (RBI) both had a pair of hits including a double. Koby Stansel (RBI), Marco Haro, and Titus Jones had hits. Bailey Ward added one RBI.


The loss dropped the Phoenix to a 4-3 record.


Woodland (7-6) hosts Pickens Tuesday at 5:55 p.m. in a non-region contest before starting Region 7-AAAAA play Friday at home against Cass.
