Athletes Beyond Bartow: Mosby named all-conference, updates for college hoops, golf, softball, tenni
Former Cartersville Hurricanes’ basketball standout A.J. Mosby was named to the Southwestern Athletic Conference All-Conference Second Team this week and former Cane Ryan Davis will help lead his team in the NCAA D-II Southeast Regional this week.
BSZ has the updates for local athletes participating in college basketball, softball, golf, tennis, and track and field for the week ending Sunday, March 4.

BASKETBALL
RYAN DAVIS — Francis Marion University (Jr., G, Cartersville HS)… Davis put together a couple of great showings in the Peach Belt Conference Tournament last week. In a quarterfinal rout of North Georgia, he had 12 points, eight rebounds and six assists with no turnovers. He added 19 points and three rebounds in a semifinal defeat against UNC Pembroke, which Francis Marion (20-9) also happens to face in the first round of the NCAA D-II Southeast Regional this Saturday.
KIMORA McCLINIC — Middle Georgia State University (Fr., G, Cartersville HS)… McClinic had just four total points as Middle Georgia State (8-21) went 1-1 in the Southern States Athletic Conference Tournament, defeating ninth-seeded Brewton-Parker before falling by nine points to No. 1 seed Martin Methodist. McClinic had four points and one rebound in the victory, and she went scoreless with two steals in the loss.
A.J. MOSBY — Alcorn State University (Sr., G, Cartersville HS)… Mosby landed all-SWAC second-team honors this week after finishing the regular season with averages of 15.2 points per game, 4.7 rebounds per game and 3.9 assists per game. He led the league in assist-to-turnover ratio and free-throw percentage (.873). Mosby also shot 50 percent from the floor and 40 percent from deep. In his final two regular season games, Mosby totaled 19 points against Prairie View A&M and 10 versus Texas Southern. He posted five rebounds in each game and dished out a total of 13 assists. He even grabbed five steals. Alcorn State (11-20) will travel to Prairie View for a SWAC quarterfinal on Thursday.
JONATHAN PRITCHETT — Vermont Tech CC — Fr., G, Woodland HS)… Pritchett earned his first start of the season in the consolation bracket of the United States College Athletic Association Division II National Tournament. He took advantage with 15 points, two rebounds, one assist and six steals in 30 minutes. Vermont Tech finished the season with a 20-13 mark.
CARROD WATSON — University of North Georgia (Soph., F, Woodland HS)… Watson had five points, two rebounds, one assist, two steals and one block in North Georgia's season-ending loss to Francis Marion in the Peach Belt Conference Tournament on Wednesday. The Nighthawks finished the year with a 12-17 record.
RUDY WINTERS — Columbus State (R-Jr., G, Excel Christian Acad.)… Columbus State bowed out in the first round of the Peach Belt Conference Tournament, ending Winters' season. However, he did everything he could to extend it. He had 17 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the field, including hitting one of two from deep, and a 6-of-7 performance at the line. CSU finished the season with a 9-17 mark.
GOLF
MAGGIE ASHMORE — Augusta University (Sr., Kingston, GA, Heritage Golf Acad., Hilton Head, SC)… Ashmore and Augusta opened play Monday in the 17-team Wildcat Invitational hosted by Arizona at Sewailo Golf Club. Ashmore shot an opening round 83 Monday, but the Lady Jaguars were in sixth place heading into Tuesday’s final round. After one round, UCLA had a 10-shot lead over Texas, followed by host Arizona, Long Beach State, and UNLV.
HANNAH MAE DEEMS — Mercer University (Sr., Taylorsville, GA, Darlington HS)… Deems and Mercer began play Monday in the three-day, 13-team Hurricane Invitational hosted by Miami at the Biltmore Golf Course in Coral Gables. Deems fired a first round 75 and the Lady Bears were ninth after the opening round. 16th-ranked Oklahoma leads 24th-ranked Miami after one round, followed by Coastal Carolina and Virginia Tech.
SOFTBALL
SIERRAH GANI — Georgia Highlands CC (Fr., OF, Cass HS)… Gani saw action in three of Georgia Highlands' four games this past week, but she only totaled four at bats and failed to reach base in any of them. For the season, she's hitting .255 with 10 runs scored and one RBI in 24 games. GHC (14-11, 2-2) plays at Andrew College Saturday and at ABAC Sunday.
CASSIDY HOWREN — Reinhardt University (Sr., C, Adairsville HS)… Howren went 2-for-17 over a full weekend of action. She scored one run and had one RBI, while playing in Reinhardt's five games in the Gulf Shores Tournament in Alabama. Reinhardt (8-5, 2-0 AAC) hosts Thomas University (GA) Tuesday, Faulkner University (AL) Wednesday, and will play Lawrence Tech (MI) Friday in Columbus. They will then play in the NFCA Classic in Columbus Saturday through Monday.
SYDNEY HODORFF — LaGrange College (Jr., C, Woodland HS)… Hodorff had two hits in 15 at bats during LaGrange's rough week. She scored once and drove in one run, but the Panthers went 0-6 during the stretch. LaGrange (2-12) plays at Huntingdon Tuesday before hosting Berea College (KY) Friday and Covenant College Saturday.
BRITTANY HUTH — Georgia Highlands CC (Fr., Inf., Cartersville HS)… Huth saw time in four games over the past week, swiping one base and scoring one run during that span. GHC (14-11, 2-2) plays at Andrew College Saturday and at ABAC Sunday.
KAILAH RAIN — Embry-Riddle University (Sr., OF, Cartersville HS)… Rain finished 5-for-19 with four runs scored and two RBIs in five wins for Embry-Riddle over the past week. She also drew a pair of walks and improved to 7-for-7 on stolen base attempts. ERU hosts Young Harris College Wednesday and will travel to Florida Tech for a three-game Sunshine State Conference series Friday and Saturday.
HANNAH TODD — University of North Carolina (Fr., P, Cartersville HS)… Todd failed to record an out in her only appearance over the past seven days. In her first career start for the Tar Heels, she allowed two doubles and a walk, while being charged with two earned runs in the eventual 7-3 loss to Elon. UNC (7-13) plays at UNC-Charlotte Wednesday and opens ACC play at home with a three-game series against Duke Friday through Sunday.
ANNALYN YANTIS — Samford University (Jr., P, Cartersville HS)… Yantis fell to 1-4 on the season after allowing five runs (all earned) in five innings of a 9-5 loss to Tennessee Tech on Sunday. Yantis allowed six hits and two walks with just one strikeout, as Samford dropped to 3-14 on the season. The Bulldogs host Fort Wayne Tuesday, a doubleheader with Alabama State Wednesday and will play in the Easton Crimson Classic at the University of Alabama Friday through Sunday.
TENNIS
PEYTON GOLLHOFER — Ball State University (Jr., Cartersville, GA, Laurel Springs Acad.)… Gollhofer and Ball State haven't competed since Feb. 24, but the Cardinals will be in Georgia over the next two days. Ball State (5-4) will face Kennesaw State Tuesday and Mercer on Wednesday.
TRACK AND FIELD
SPENCER FIELDS — Rhodes College (Jr., Kingston, GA, Darlington HS)… Fields took second place in the 1500 meter run in the Mississippi College Season Opener outdoor meet. His time of 4 minutes, 4.23 seconds placed him directly between sophomore teammates Toler Freyaldenhoven (first place) and Ben Griffith (third), as Rhodes swept the top three places in the event. The Lynx qualifiers compete in the NCAA D-III Indoor Championships Friday and Saturday in Birmingham.
