Colonels drop two at Pepperell


Cass lost a pair of hard-fought games at Pepperell Saturday 4-2 and 6-5.


The Dragons broke open a 2-2 game with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth to win the opener and overcame a 5-0 Cass lead through five and one-half innings to win the second game.


PEPPERELL 4, CASS 2


Pepperell took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third, but Cass knotted the score with two of their own in the top of the fourth.


Singles by Evan Hinton and Steven Spell plus a walk to Nathan Smith loaded the bases for the Colonels in the fourth. One run scored on a ground ball double play and Blaine Ingram delivered an RBI single to tie the score 2-2.


The score remained tied until the bottom of the sixth when Pepperell utilized two singles and three walks to take the lead and retired Cass in the next frame for the win.


Bryson Markley, Thomas Botts (double), and Spell (double) had two hits each for Cass. Hinton and Ingram had the other Colonels’ base hits.



PEPPERELL 6, CASS 5


In Game 2, Pepperell overcame a 5-0 deficit with two runs in the sixth and four runs in the seventh to win in walk-off fashion.


Steven Spell pitched five shutout innings as the Colonels’ starter. He allowed two hits and a walk and fanned three. Clay Means allowed a pair of unearned runs and one hit in relief. Will Parris was touched for two earned runs on a hit and two walks in the seventh and Logan Nelson was responsible for the final two runs on three hits and a walk.


Clay Means (double,2 RBI), Bryson Markley, Nathan Smith, Blaine Ingram, and Nelson had one hit each for Cass. Evan Hinton and Spell each had one RBI.


Cass (2-4) plays at Sprayberry Monday at 5:55 p.m., at Rockmart Thursday, and will host Dalton Saturday.
