Woodland soccer teams sweep Darlington to open 2018 season; Cass falls to SE Whitfield
The 2018 high school soccer season got underway Tuesday with the Woodland teams sweeping Darlington in a pair of games at Wildcats' Stadium.
Meanwhile, Cass dropped a doubleheader to visiting Southeast Whitfield.
WOODLAND GIRLS 6, DARLINGTON 0
The Lady Cats opened the 2018 season with a 6-0 blanking of visiting Darlington.
Kaitlin Winnenberg scored twice for Woodland. Jordan Evans, Emily Varga and Grace Webb all added goals in the first half. Webb also had two assists.
A trio of Lady Cats’ keepers combined for the shutout. Esmeralda Hernandez, Sheena Buchanan, and Emile Berry each saw time in net.
Woodland (1-0) hosts Cartersville Friday.
WOODLAND BOYS 2, DARLINGTON 0
The Wildcats started the 2018 season with a 2-0 win over Darlington.
Preston Godfrey and Kevin Moreno posted the Woodland goals.
Woodland (1-0) entertains local-rival Cartersville Friday.
SOUTHEAST WHITFIELD GIRLS 3, CASS 2
The visiting Lady Raiders scored in the 78th minute to snap a 2-2 tie and edge the Lady Colonels in their 2018 season opener.
Southeast led 2-0 on goals in the 34th and 41st minutes before Cass rallied to tie the game in the second half.
Brianna Ochoa scored for Cass in the 44th minute off an assist from Morgan DeLam to narrow the margin to 2-1. Emily Tracy then found Logan Vermaas in the 71st minute to score the equalizer.
Southeast scored the go-ahead goal in the game’s 78th minute.
Cass (0-1) travels to Northwest Whitfield Friday.
SOUTHEAST WHITFIELD BOYS 4, CASS 2
Jonathan Tong gave the Colonels an early lead just four minutes into the game and Carlos Perez scored on a penalty kick late for Cass, but it was not enough in a 4-2 home loss Tuesday night to the Raiders.
Southeast Whitfield tied the game in the 15th minute and scored back-to-back goals in the final minute of the first half to lead 3-1 at the break. The Raiders added a fourth goal midway through the second half.
Cass keeper Isai Romero had 11 saves in the loss.
The Colonels (0-1) travel to Northwest Whitfield Friday.
