Athletes Beyond Bartow: Mosby among league leaders in SWAC, Thrower scores career high
On the college hardwoods this past week, former Hurricane A.J. Mosby continued to perform as a statistical leader in the Southwestern Athletic Conference for the Alcorn State Braves and former Excel Christian Academy standout Darius Thrower scored a new career high in a game for Truett McConnell.
Meanwhile, the collegiate wrestling season moved closer to post-season and former Adairsville swimmer Katelynn Lawhorn contributed on multiple relay teams at the conference championships for Life University.
There was also action on the college softball and baseball diamonds this past week.
BASKETBALL
RYAN DAVIS — Francis Marion University (Jr., G, Cartersville HS)… scored nine points with eight rebounds, five assists, and one steal in an 86-82 home win last Wednesday over USC Aiken. Davis then scored four points with three rebounds and one assist in an 84-70 loss Saturday at Clayton State. FMU (13-7, 8-7 Peach Belt Conference) plays at Lander Wednesday before hosting North Georgia Saturday for the Patriots’ 2018 Homecoming Game.
KIMORA McCLINIC — Middle Georgia State University (Fr., G, Cartersville HS)… played more than 20 minutes and scored six points in both of the Knights’ games last week. She had two rebounds and two assists in a 71-69 home win last Thursday over Mobile University and added three rebounds and three assists in an 82-65 home loss Saturday to Loyola (LA) University. MGSU (5-16, 2-10 Southern States Athletic Conference) hosts Brenau University Monday and Brewton-Parker Thursday.
JANA MORNING — Berry College (Fr., G, Cass HS)… started both games this past weekend as the Lady Vikings edged Rhodes College (59-58) and Hendrix College (75-74) in home conference games Friday and Sunday. Morning did not score in 18 minutes against Rhodes, but added three rebounds and two steals. She scored eight points with two rebounds, one assist, and three steals vs. Hendrix. Berry (10-11, 5-6 SSAC) plays at Centre College (KY) Friday and at Sewanee University Sunday.
A.J. MOSBY — Alcorn State University (Sr., G, Cartersville HS)… played 32 minutes and scored 17 points with nine rebounds, three assists, and one steal Saturday in the Braves’ 60-57 loss at Jackson State. Mosby leads the SWAC in assist to turnover ratio (2.2), ranks third in the conference in assists (3.4 apg), and ranks fourth in field goal percentage (.498). He leads the Braves with 13.2 points per game, is shooting a team-high .882 from the free throw line, and leads the team in assists and steals. ASU (plays at Grambling State Monday and entertains Mississippi Valley State Saturday. Both contests are Southwestern Athletic Conference games.
GREG MURPHY — Young Harris College (Jr., F, Woodland HS)… scored three points with two rebounds, one assist, and one blocked shot last Wednesday in an 88-85 home loss to Clayton State. He then scored nine points with four rebounds, two assists, one block, and one steal in a 74-72 loss at Georgia Southwestern. YHC (entertains North Georgia Wednesday night before traveling to UNC Pembroke Saturday.
JONATHAN PRITCHETT — Vermont Tech (Fr., G, Woodland HS)… scored five points with three rebounds, three assists, and two blocks last Friday in 66-51 home loss to Pine Manor College. He also posted two points, two rebounds, six assists, and three steals in a 66-56 home victory over Paul Smith’s College on Saturday. The Knights (16-9, 11-4 Yankee Small College Conference) host College of St. Joseph Wednesday and play at Southern Maine CC on Saturday.
ELIJAH ROBINSON — Emmanuel College (Sr., F, Excel Christian Acad.)… scored 23 points with six rebounds and two blocked shots last Wednesday in a 66-65 loss at North Greenville. He then scored five points Saturday with eight rebounds and seven assists in a 94-86 home victory over King (TN) University. The Lions (13-9, 7-5 Conference Carolinas) play at Limestone College Saturday.
DARIUS THROWER — Truett McConnell University (Soph., G, Excel Christian Acad.)… scored a career-high 20 points last Thursday on 6-of-6 shooting from the field that included five, three-pointers. He also had one rebound and one assist, but the Bears lost at Point University, 101-98. He also added one rebound and one assist last Tuesday in a 67-55 home win over St. Andrews (NC) University. TMU (15-11, 8-9 Appalachian Athletic Conference) plays Allen (SC) University Wednesday night at home and travels to Columbia International University Saturday.
COREY TOBIN — Reinhardt University (Sr., G, Cartersville HS)… scored 13 points with nine rebounds, one assist, one block, and two steals Saturday in a 104-82 loss at Bluefield (VA) College. He scored eight points with four rebounds, two assists, and one steal last Thursday in an 80-75 home loss to Bryan (TN) College. He also scored three points with three rebounds, three assists, and one blocked shot last Tuesday in a 93-92 home win over 16th-ranked Union (KY) College. The Eagles (13-12, 8-8 Appalachian Athletic Conference) travel to Tennessee Wesleyan University Wednesday and entertain St. Andrews (NC) University Saturday in conference games.
CARROD WATSON — University of North Georgia (Soph., F, Woodland HS)… saw action in all three of the Nighthawks Peach Belt Conference games last week. He scored two points with four rebounds, one assist, and one steal in a 96-79 loss last Monday to Clayton State. Watson had one assist in an 85-83 home victory over Columbus State and he scored seven points with one rebound and one assist in a home 80-79 win over USC Aiken. UNG (10-11, 8-7 PBC) travels to Young Harris College Wednesday night, plays at Francis Marion University Saturday, and UNC-Pembroke Sunday.
HAKEEM WINTERS — Point University (Jr., F, Cartersville HS)… scored two points and recorded a pair of steals last Tuesday in a 99-63 loss at Bryan (TN) College. He also scored ten points with five rebounds, one blocked shot, and two steals Saturday in a 95-49 loss at Milligan (TN) College. The Skyhawks travel to 16th-ranked Union (KY) College Saturday.
RUDY WINTERS — Columbus State University (Jr., G, Excel Christian Acad.)… started and scored two points with five rebounds, one assist, and one steal in the Cougars’ 85-83 loss at University of North Georgia last Wednesday. CSU (6-12, 6-9 Peach Belt Conference) hosts Georgia Southwestern Wednesday night and plays at Lander Saturday.
SOFTBALL
SIERRAH GANI — Georgia Highlands CC (Fr., OF, Cass HS)… was 5-for-14 scoring two runs and driving in one as the Chargers started the year 3-2. GHC dropped a doubleheader at Lake Sumter State College January 26 in Leesburg, FL before defeating St. Petersburg College, Florida State College, and Pasco-Hernando State last Tuesday. The Chargers (5-2) also picked up a pair of wins over Thomas University JV last Friday and will host Enterprise State CC, Shelton State CC, and Southern Union CC this Saturday in the Border Battle Tournament plus a doubleheader with Harford CC on Sunday.

HANNAH KNAPP -- Coastal Alabama CC (Soph., Adairsville HS)... has played in two of her team's five games, reaching safely in four of six at bats. She has three hits, has scored three runs, and has three RBI. The Eagles (1-4) host East Central CC Tuesday and Pearl River CC Thursday in doubleheaders.
KAILAH RAIN — Embry-Riddle University (Sr., OF, Cartersville HS)… singled and drove in a run during a 3-2 win over Georgia College and had a pair of RBIs with a fielder’s choice and a single in a 7-3 win over University of Montevallo Saturday in the Southern Softball Showdown in Columbus, GA. Sunday’s games were rained out. The Eagles (2-0) play three games this weekend at the South/Southeast Region Crossover at Flagler College.
BASEBALL
GRAYSON BAGWELL — LaGrange College (Fr., P, Woodland HS)… entered in the eighth inning last Friday and yielded a pair of walks, three unearned runs, and was tagged with the pitching loss in the Panthers’ 13-5 home loss to Sewanee College. Bagwell fanned one batter. LaGrange (2-1) hosts Emory University Tuesday and a three-game series with Centre College (KY) Saturday and Sunday.
NOAH DANIEL — Reinhardt University (Fr., OF, Cartersville HS)… appeared in two games, starting one in left field as the Eagles dropped three games over the weekend to visiting Cumberland University (TN). Daniel scored one run in four official at bats. RU (0-3) plays Friday and Saturday at LakePoint in Emerson where they will face Campbellsville (KY) twice, Texas College, and St. Francis (IN).
BRANDON ETHERIDGE — Limestone College (Sr., OF/P, Cass HS)… starting all four games in centerfield for the Saints, Etheridge was 2-for-11 with one sacrifice hit as Limestone won two-of-three against Carson-Newman and defeated Pfeiffer (NC) over the past weekend. The Saints (3-1) continue their homestand this weekend with a four-game set against Merrimack College.
CARRINGTON EVANS — Augusta University (Soph., OF, Cartersville HS)… started all three games and was 3-for-9 at the plate with a pair of runs scored, but the Jaguars dropped three games over the weekend to visiting University of West Georgia. Augusta (0-3) travels to Erskine College (SC) Wednesday and plays a three-game Peach Belt Conference series Friday through Sunday at Francis Marion University.
LANE GRIFFITH — University of West Georgia (Jr., C, Adairsville HS)… started in game three of a series at Augusta University over the weekend and was 0-for-2 with two walks and a run scored as the Wolves completed a sweep of the Jags with a 14-3 victory. West Georgia (3-0) entertains Georgia College Tuesday and West Alabama in a three-game set Friday and Saturday.
CODY JOHNSON — Georgia Highlands CC (Fr., RHP, Cass HS)… tossed the final two innings Friday with two strikeouts and one walk to earn the pitching win as the Chargers defeated Chattanooga State CC at LakePoint, 7-6. GHC (3-1) hosts Bryan College for a doubleheader Tuesday and Walters State CC (TN) Saturday and Sunday in a three-game series.
HARRISON OSBORN — Point University (Fr., RHP, Cartersville HS)… worked the middle three innings Saturday in a home 10-3 loss to NAIA 10th-ranked Keiser University. Osborn faced 13 batters and allowed two earned runs on four hits and a walk with three strikeouts. Point (0-3) hosts University of Pikeville in a three-game series Friday and Saturday in West Point.
TYLER WASHINGTON — Young Harris College (Sr., OF, Adairsville HS)… started all three games in the Mountain Lions season opening series at Rollins College (FL). Washington was 2-for-7 in the series with a double, two runs scored, three walks, two stolen bases, and two RBI. YHC (0-3) travels to Anderson (SC) University Wednesday before hosting Shorter Friday through Sunday in a three-game series at Zell Miller Field in Young Harris.
WRESTLING
EVAN COLE — Cumberland University (Sr., 149 wt. division, Cartersville HS)…lost to Dimitri Alicea 4-2 in a 22-12 loss to NAIA 6th-ranked Life University and lost a 5-3 decision to Michael Diemer in a 20-16 loss to 12th-ranked Campbellsville University Saturday at home. The Phoenix (2-9, 0-5 Mid-South Conference) wrestle at Brewton-Parker Friday night.
ROBBY EARICK — Life University (Fr., 133 wt. division, Cartersville HS)… finished 1-2 Saturday at the Newberry Open in South Carolina. The Running Eagles (14-4, 3-2 Mid-South Conference) hit the mats next in Bowling Green, KY at the Mid-South Conference Tournament on February 17.
TENNIS
PEYTON GOLLHOFER — Ball State University (Jr., Cartersville resident, Laurel Springs Acad.)… paired up with teammate Lilya Hadab for a 6-3 doubles win at Line 3, but lost her Line 1 singles match 6-4, 6-1 to Karoline Haller as the Cardinals lost 4-3 at Wright State Sunday afternoon. Ball State (3-2) hosts Valparaiso University this Saturday.
SWIMMING
KATELYNN LAWHORN — Life University (Fr., Adairsville HS)… competing at the 2018 Mid-South Conference Championships over the weekend, Lawhorn teamed with Carla Colon, Kirsten Coetzee, and Claire Ryland to finish fifth in the women’s 200 medley relay with a time of 1:56.33. The same relay team placed seventh in the 200 freestyle relay (1:47.89), was seventh in the 400 medley relay (4:24.98), and sixth in the 400 freestyle relay (3:57.04). The Running Eagles compete next at the NAIA National Championships February 28-March 3 in Columbus, GA.
