Hot-shooting Pugh scores 38 but Canes' rally comes up short

A late rally by the Cartersville Hurricanes and a 38-point performance by the Canes’ Furman University commit, Jaylon Pugh, was not enough to overcome Millbrook of Raleigh, NC Friday night in the consolation semifinals of the Lake City Classic at Allatoona High School.

Cartersville trailed 33-26 at halftime and 52-38 after three quarters, but surged back in the fourth quarter to narrow the margin to 63-59 before Millbrook closed out the 70-63 win.

Adrian Scarborough scored 17 and Jabari Brown 14 points to lead Millbrook. The Wildcats improved to 7-5 on the year.

For Cartersville, Pugh’s hot shooting night included nine three-pointers and an 18-point outburst in the fourth quarter. T.J. Horton added 10 points for the Canes.

Cartersville (7-2) will host Cedartown in a Region 5-AAAA matchup Tuesday, Jan. 2 at the Storm Center. The girls’ game is scheduled for 6 p.m. with the boys game to follow at approximately 7:30 p.m.
