Athletes Beyond Bartow: Update for current local collegiate athletes in college football, wrestling,

This week's update for our local collegiate football, wrestling, and basketball athletes.

 

FOOTBALL


DeANDRE APPLIN — Georgia State University (Jr., DB, Adairsville HS)… made a pair of tackles in the Panthers’ 27-17 win over Western Kentucky last Saturday at the Camping World Bowl in Orlando, FL. The victory was Georgia State’s first-ever bowl win. Applin finished the year with 46 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, three pass break-ups, one forced fumble, and one interception. GSU finished the year 7-5.


TREVOR CARLTON — Reinhardt University (Jr., LB, Cartersville HS)… made five tackles (four solo) including credit for 1.5 tackles for loss in the Eagles’ 24-13 NAIA National Championship Game loss to St. Francis (IN) Saturday night in Daytona Beach, FL. Carlton finished the year with 43 total tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, one sack, one pass break up, and one fumble recovery. Reinhardt (12-1) finished national runner-up in NAIA.


LUCAS JOHNSON — Georgia State University (Jr., OL, Cass HS)… did not start, but saw action as part of the offensive line rotation for the Panthers in their 27-17 Camping World Bowl win last Saturday in Orlando, FL. The bowl win was a first for the GSU program. The Panthers finished the year with a 7-5 record.


EMMANUEL JONES — Colorado State University (Fr., LB, Woodland HS)… made three tackles in the Rams’ 31-28 New Mexico Bowl loss to Marshall last Saturday in Albuquerque, NM. Jones finished the year with 35 tackles (16 solo), six tackles for loss, two sacks, and one quarterback hit. Colorado State finished the season with a 7-6 mark.




WRESTLING



EVAN COLE — Cumberland University (Sr., 149-wt. class, Cartersville HS) … lost a 5-2 decision to DeQuaylon Gray at the Smoky Mountain Duals Sunday as the Phoenix defeated Central Baptist 43-9. Cumberland also lost a match to Reinhardt, 33-11. Cumberland wrestles next at the National Wrestling Coaches Association Championships January 5-6 in Ft. Wayne, IN.


JAKE HUFFINE — UT-Chattanooga (Jr, 133-lb. wt. class, Woodland HS)… lost a 12-4 decision to Luke Pletcher in the Mocs 39-3 loss Sunday to Ohio State in Alpharetta, GA. UTC (4-3) wrestles Ohio University Monday night.


JERMEL LEWIS — Emmauel College (Jr., 184-lb. wt. class, Woodland HS)… lost both of his matches in the 184-lb division of the Midwest Classic in Indianapolis. Emmanuel placed 27th of 35 teams at the tournament. The Lions host King University (TN) January 9.


HUNTER QUINN — Emmanuel College (Soph., 157-lb. wt. class, Cass HS)… wrestling in the 157-lb. weight class, Quinn defeated Bailey Neises of Augustana before falling to Garrett Hall (Ashland) and Danny Conley (Central Missouri) at the 39th annual Midwest Classic in Indianapolis. Emmanuel finished 27th of 35 teams at the event. The Lions host King University (TN) January 9.




BASKETBALL


RYAN DAVIS — Francis Marion University (Jr., G, Cartersville HS)… scored 20 points with eight rebounds, five assists, and two steals in a 91-75 win at Mount Olive last Wednesday. He also scored seven points, grabbed four rebounds, and dished out six assists in an 87-67 home win over Georgia Southwestern on Sunday. FMU (7-0, 2-0 Peach Belt Conference) hosts Columbus State University Tuesday night.


JANA MORNING — Berry College (Fr., G, Cass HS)… only played one minute Saturday and missed a pair of free throws in a 63-60 win at LaGrange College last Saturday. Morning has started one game and seen action in all eight games for the Lady Vikings. Berry (4-4) plays Elmira and Alverno Wednesday and Thursday at the D3 St. Pete Classic in St. Peterburg, FL.


A.J. MOSBY — Alcorn State University (Sr., G, Cartersville HS)… the Braves’ starting guard scored 19 points with eight rebounds and five assists in a 77-69 home win last Tuesday over Fisk University. ASU (3-8) hosts NAIA Blue Mountain College Monday night and travels to Vanderbilt for another non-conference game Friday night.


DARIUS THROWER — Truett-McConnell University (Soph., G, Excel Christian Acad.)… scored a season-high 13 points last Friday night, collected five rebounds, and had two assists in a 97-58 home win over Calvary University. He also scored two points and had two rebounds last Monday in a 101-42 win over Toccoa Falls College. He added one rebound in only two minutes of playing time last Saturday night during a 102-89 home loss to Florida College. TMU (12-3) plays at University of Rio Grande (OH) on Friday, Dec. 29.


CARROD WATSON — University of North Georgia (Soph., F/C, Woodland HS)…scored three points and grabbed three rebounds with one steal in a 74-64 win at Flagler College last Saturday. UNG (3-5, 1-1 Peach Belt Conference) plays at Augusta University Tuesday.


HAKEEM WINTERS — Point University (Jr., F, Cartersville HS)… scored eight points and collected three rebounds with two blocks and one steal 110-66 exhibition loss at The Citadel. Point (4-12) plays at College of Coastal Georgia Tuesday night.


RUDY WINTERS — Columbus State University (Jr., G/F, Excel Christian Acad.)… scored nine points with an assist and five rebounds as the Cougars won 70-67 at UNC-Pembroke Sunday afternoon. CSU (2-3, 2-0 Peach Belt Conference) play at Francis Marion Tuesday night.
