CPRD youth football teams win GRPA state championships


Cartersville 10U football all-stars

The Cartersville Parks and Recreation Department youth football teams in the 8U, 10U, and 12U divisions traveled to Savannah this weekend with a following of about 400 fans and came away Saturday with a pair of state championships.


The 12U and 10U Cartersville teams won Georgia Parks and Recreation Association (GRPA) state titles at Grayson Football Stadium in Savannah.

 

12U CARTERSVILLE 16, SAVANNAH WHIPPERS 8


Christian Vera scored on a 45 yard touchdown reception from Brelace Williams and Khristian Lando scored on a six yard run for Cartersville. Trevor Harris connected on a pair of two-point conversion kicks.


Although the entire defensive unit was credited with playing well, KJ Johnson, Christian Wood, Braydon Pope, Tae Cochran, and Lando were credited with outstanding defensive plays.


Cartersville (4-0) also had GRPA District 5 wins over Gordon County 46-0, Calhoun 28-16, and Dalton 36-0.

10U CARTERSVILLE 31, SAVANNAH STARS 6


The 10U Cartersville youth football all-stars won in decisive fashion Saturday to capture the 2017 GRPA state championship over the Savannah Stars, 31-6.


Brodie McWhorter threw for a pair of touchdowns and picked off a pass to set up another score to help lead the way for Cartersville.


Jakeveon Porter caught a 45-yard touchdown pass and returned an interception 30 yards for another touchdown. Porter also added an extra point. JaCaiden Leonard scored on a 45 yard fumble recovery, a 65 yard interception return, and added a 15 yard touchdown run. Jabari Davis hauled in a 65-yard touchdown on a halfback pass, while Baylon Long and Jordyn Woods were credited with outstanding defensive efforts.


During its state title run, Cartersville (4-0) had wins over Gordon County 44-0, Calhoun 30-16, and Bartow County, 6-0.

8U SAVANNAH STARS 20, CARTERSVILLE 0


A bigger and faster 8U Savannah Stars team blanked Cartersville for the 2017 GRPA 8U state championship.


Cartersville’s CJ McClendon rushed for 60 yards and Jovani Bautista-Jackson rushed for another 50 yards, but the locals could not crack the end zone.


Jorian Bailey made 10 tackles, including four for loss to lead the Cartersville defense. Dixon Lindsey and Pyerston Chambers had six tackles each. Peyton Paul added five tackles.


Cartersville (3-1) defeated Gordon County 33-0, Calhoun 26-6, and Dalton 12-0 to reach the championship game.
