Woodland boys win opener at Gordon Central

The Woodland boys basketball team opened the 2017-18 season Friday night with a non-region 67-41 win at Gordon Central.


Charles Norman scored 23 to lead the Wildcats and Hunter Johnson followed with 14 points.


The score was tied 13-13 at the end of one quarter and Woodland outscored Gordon Central 19-10 in the second period to take a 32-23 lead.


The Warriors narrowed the lead to eight points after three quarters, but Woodland outscored Gordon Central 24-6 in the final period for a 26 point victory.


DJ Robinson added eight points for Woodland. Connor Gallagher scored seven. Dawson Wilkins chipped in with six points while Jaylen Ballard contributed three with Peyton Roberts and Justice Carter adding two points each.


Gabe Ross led Gordon Central (0-1) with 15 points. Quan Curtis scored ten and Corey Dixon eight for the Warriors.


Woodland (1-0) takes on North Paulding Saturday at 4:30 p.m. at Paulding County High School.





GORDON CENTRAL GIRLS 55, WOODLAND 31



Mercedes Coleman poured in 28 points and Leila Culberson added 12 to help lead Gordon Central past the visiting Woodland Lady Cats Friday night in Calhoun, 55-31.


Gordon Central (1-0) took an 18-10 lead after one quarter and led 33-15 at halftime.


Madgie Robinson, Morgan Cooper, and Nickiah Metcalf scored six points each for Woodland. Leah Stantz scored four points. Whitney Harris added three points, while Ansley Evans, Makayla Dowdy, and Lauren Morris chipped in two points each.


Woodland (0-1) plays at Allatoona Tuesday at 4 p.m.
