Athletes Beyond Bartow: Childers, Ross continue big contributions

Former Adairsville Tigers quarterback Marcus Childers continued his productive play for Northern Illinois and former Woodland standout Isaiah Ross was the leading tackler for Point University this past Saturday to highlight local collegiate football contributions.



In the NFL, Adairsville’s Vic Beasley had five tackles, including a sack, but the Falcons lost their third straight game.

Vic Beasley, Atlanta Falcons

VIC BEASLEY — Atlanta Falcons (3rd yr. pro; LB, Clemson Univ.; Adairsville HS). . . had five total tackles (4 solo) and one sack in the Falcons’ 23-7 loss at the New England Patriots Sunday night. Atlanta (3-3) plays this Sunday afternoon at the New York Jets.

 
DeAndre Applin, Georgia State University

DeANDRE APPLIN — Georgia State University (Jr., DB, Adairsville HS). . . made three tackles in the Panthers’ home 34-10 loss to Troy last Saturday. GSU (3-3, 2-1 Sun Belt Conference) host South Alabama Thursday night.

Marcus Childers, Northern Illinois

MARCUS CHILDERS — Northern Illinois University (R-Fr., QB, Adairsville HS). . . completed 21-of-33 passes for 239 yards and three touchdowns while rushing 19 times for 73 net yards as his Huskies overpowered Bowling Green 48-17. Childers had a long run of 29 yards and a long pass play of 73 yards. Childers has moved into the starting role and enjoyed a high level of success over the past three weeks while NIU has won all three Mid-America Conference games. Northern Illinois (5-2, 3-0) hosts conference rival Eastern Michigan Thursday night.


DALEN CURTIS — Brevard College (Fr., OL, Cartersville HS). . . was the starting center for the Tornados in a 27-24 home loss to Ferrum. Brevard (3-5), who accumulated 252 yards of total offense against Ferrum, plays at North Carolina Wesleyan this Saturday afternoon.



TRASE FEZZIA — Ellsworth CC (Fr., DB, Cartersville HS). . . contributed three kickoff returns for a 12.7 average Saturday and had one tackle on defense in a 16-14 road loss at Fort Scott CC. Ellsworth (3-5, 1-0 Iowa Community College Athletic Association) hosts Butler CC this Saturday night.





T.L. Ford II, Charlotte

T.L. FORD II — UNC-Charlotte (Sr., WR, Cartersville HS). . . started at wide receiver and made three receptions Saturday, including one in overtime, as the 49ers picked up their first win of the season over Alabama-Birmingham, 25-24. Charlotte (1-7, 1-3 Conference USA) plays at Old Dominion in Norfolk, VA this Saturday afternoon.



EMMANUEL JONES — Colorado State University (Fr., LB, Woodland HS). . . was part of a tackle for loss Friday night in the Rams’ 27-24 road Mountain West Conference win at New Mexico. CSU (6-2, 4-0) hosts Air Force this Saturday afternoon.


Rodney Mitchell, Coastal Carolina University

RODNEY MITCHELL — Coastal Carolina University (Sr., OL, Cartersville HS). . . the Chanticleers’ starting left tackle was part of an offense that totaled 434 yards, but lost at Appalachian State this past Saturday 37-29. CCU (1-6, 0-4 Sun Belt Conference) hosts Texas State in their homecoming game this Saturday night.



MARK QUATTLEBAUM — UNC-Charlotte (Jr., SL, Cartersville HS). . . was targeted three times and made a pair of receptions Saturday for 23 yards as the 49ers edged Conference USA rival Alabama-Birmingham 25-24 for their first win of the season. Charlotte (1-7, 1-3) travels to Norfolk, VA to play Old Dominion this Saturday afternoon in a conference matchup.

Isaiah Ross, Point University football


ISAIAH ROSS — Point University (Sr., LB, Woodland HS). . . led the Skyhawks with nine total tackles, a forced fumble, and one tackle for loss this past Saturday in a 46-19 home loss to St. Andrews. Ross has 45 tackles this season through eight games and is the team’s third leading tackler. Point (2-6, 1-3 Appalachian Athletic Conference) hosts Ave Maria University this Saturday.


JOHN SCIFERS — University West Georgia (Fr., PK, Woodland HS). . . kicked off four times for a 57 yard average and one touchback as the Wolves blanked winless Mississippi College in Clinton, MS 28-0 last Saturday. UWG (6-2, 3-2 Gulf South Conference) host Shorter University Thursday night in Carrollton.6161616


TORRIAN SCRUTCHINS — Ellsworth CC (Fr., DL, Cartersville HS). . . saw playing time in the Panthers’ 16-14 road loss at Fort Scott CC last Saturday. Ellsworth (3-5, 1-0 Iowa Community College Athletic Association) hosts Butler CC this Saturday night.


BRETT SHEDD — Shorter University (Soph., LS, Woodland HS). . . the Hawks’ long snapper saw action Saturday in a home 42-29 loss to University of West Florida. Shorter (0-8, 0-5 Gulf South Conference) plays at University of West Georgia this Thursday night.


SHELBY TOWNSEND JR. — Georgia Southern University (R-Jr., TE, Woodland HS). . . saw playing time in the Eagles’ 55-20 loss this past Saturday at UMass. GSU (0-6, 0-2 Sun Belt Conference) plays at Troy this Saturday afternoon.


JAKE WALKER — Furman University (Fr., TE, Cartersville, GA, Darlington HS). . . has seen playing time in each of the Paladins’ games this season but was not targeted this past Saturday in Furman’s 28-21 homecoming win over Mercer. It was the fifth straight win for Furman (5-3, 4-1 Southern Conference) who plays at Western Carolina this Saturday afternoon.
