Former Adairsville Tigers' standout Marcus Childers had a breakout game for the Northern Illinois Huskies and former Woodland star Emmanuel Jones had two sacks Saturday for the Colorado State Rams as local college football players made their marks around the nation.

DeAndre Applin, Georgia State

DeANDRE APPLIN — Georgia State University (Jr., DB, Adairsville HS). . . made five tackles, three solo and two assists as the Panthers won at Coastal Carolina last Saturday 27-21. Applin has 19 tackles, one tackle for loss, and one pass break up through the first four games. GSU (2-2, 1-0 Sun Belt Conference) plays at Louisiana-Monroe this Saturday.


CHRIS BLACKSTON -- University of West Georgia (Soph., DB, Adairsville HS). . . saw action Saturday as West Georgia beat Valdosta State 42-13 in the Battle for the Peach Basket. 23rd-ranked UWG (5-1, 2-1 Gulf South Conference) travels to LIvingston, AL to face the 21st-ranked West Alabama Tigers in a GSC matchup next Saturday evening.


TERRIUS CALLAHAN — Austin Peay State University (R-Fr., WR, Cartersville HS). . . saw playing time and was targeted twice in the fourth quarter but did not have a reception in a 34-14 home loss to FCS 4th-ranked Jacksonville State last Saturday. The Governors (3-3, 2-1 Ohio Valley Conference) travel to Nashville Saturday night to challenge Tennessee State. APSU received votes this week in the most recent FCS top 25 poll.


TREVOR CARLTON — Reinhardt University (Jr., LB/S, Cartersville HS). . . had one solo tackle in the second quarter last Saturday during the Eagles’ 53-7 blowout of University of Cumberlands (KY). NAIA 3rd-ranked Reinhardt (5-0, 2-0 Mid South Conference) hosts Union College (KY) this Saturday night in Waleska.


Marcus Childers, NIU

MARCUS CHILDERS — Northern Illinois University (R-Fr., QB, Adairsville HS). . . with rain coming down sideways, Childers was 13-for-21 for 114 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for 65 yards on 17 carries last Saturday as the Huskies defeated visiting Kent State 24-3. Childers longest pass completion was 25 yards and he did throw one interception in the end zone in the fourth quarter. His longest rushing play went for 28 yards and his total gains were 90 yards. He was sacked twice for 25 yards leaving his net rushing yardage less. Childers is one of three quarterbacks to see playing time for the Huskies this season. NIU (3-2, 1-0 Mid-America Conference) travels to New York this Saturday afternoon to play conference rival Buffalo.



DALEN CURTIS — Brevard College (Fr., OL, Cartersville HS). . . The Tornados starting center was part of an attack that accumulated 273 passing yards Saturday in a 21-14 defeat of visiting Virginia-Lynchburg. Brevard scored a pair of touchdowns in the fourth quarter to pull out the victory and improve to 2-4 on the season. The Tornados travel east to Fayetteville this Saturday to play at Methodist.

Trase Fezzia, Ellsworth CC


TRASE FEZZIA — Ellsworth CC (Fr., DB, Cartersville HS). . . returned six kickoffs last Saturday for 162 yards and a 27 yard average as the Panthers lost at Independence CC, 44-38. Fezzia also had three solo tackles in the game. Ellsworth (3-3, 1-0 Iowa Community College Athletic Conference) hosts Hutchinson CC this Saturday afternoon.



T.L. FORD II — UNC-Charlotte (Sr., WR, Cartersville HS). . . started at wide receiver and was targeted only once in the first quarter in a 14-3 home loss to Marshall last Saturday. Charlotte (0-6, 0-2 Conference USA) plays at Western Kentucky this Saturday.

Gordon Gray, Kennesaw State


GORDON GRAY — Kennesaw State University (R-Jr., WR, Cartersville HS). . . saw playing time in the Owls’ 48-3 non-conference home win over Texas Southern. KSU (4-1) starts Big South Conference play this Saturday night in Lynchburg, VA at Liberty. The Owls' received votes this week in the FCS top 25 poll.



GABE GRIDLEY — ASA New York CC (Soph., Punter, Cartersville HS). . . punted three times for 102 yards and a 34 yard average as the Avengers defeated Lackawanna CC 21-14 last Saturday. Gridley’s long punt in the game was 39 yards. He has 16 punts this season for a 39.4 yard average and a long punt of 53 yards. Three of his punts have been downed inside the 20 yard line.


HUNTER HARDIN — Point University (Fr., OL, Woodland HS). . . saw playing time in the Skyhawks’ 34-31 Appalachian Athletic Conference win at University of Pikeville (KY). Point (2-4, 1-1) hosts Bluefield College (VA) this Saturday afternoon.

Emmanuel Jones, Colorado State


EMMANUEL JONES — Colorado State University (Fr., LB, Woodland HS). . . made four tackles, three solo, in the Rams’ 27-14 Mountain West Conference win over Utah State. Jones also had two sacks that totaled minus 13 yards. He has seen playing time in each CSU game this season and has 15 tackles, including three for loss. Colorado State (4-2, 2-0 MWC) hosts Nevada this Saturday night for their homecoming game.



RODNEY MITCHELL — Coastal Carolina University (Sr., OL, Cartersville HS). . . the Chanticleers’ starting left tackle helped CCU to 127 rushing yards and 366 total yards in a 27-21 loss to visiting Georgia State. Coastal (1-4, 0-2 Sun Belt Conference) plays Saturday at Arkansas State.



MARK QUATTLEBAUM — UNC-Charlotte (R-Jr., SL, Cartersville HS). . . started as a slot receiver for the 49ers and made one catch for four yards in a home 14-3 loss to Marshall last Saturday. He was targeted twice on back-to-back plays in the opening period. Charlotte (0-6, 0-2 Conference USA) plays at Western Kentucky this Saturday.

Isaiah Ross, Point University


ISAIAH ROSS — Point University (Sr., LB, Woodland HS). . . made seven total tackles last Saturday — five solo — in the Skyhawks’ 34-31 conference win at University of Pikeville (KY). Point (2-4, 1-1 Appalachian Athletic Conference) hosts AAC-foe Bluefield College (VA) this Saturday afternoon.



JOHN SCIFERS — University of West Georgia (Fr., K, Woodland HS). . . had seven kickoffs for a 56 yard average last Saturday as the Wolves defeated visiting Valdosta State 42-13. 23rd-ranked UWG (5-1, 2-1 Gulf South Conference) travels to LIvingston, AL to face the 21st-ranked West Alabama Tigers in a GSC matchup next Saturday evening.


TORRIAN SCRUTCHINS — Ellsworth CC (Fr., DL, Cartersville HS). . . saw playing time in the Panthers’ 44-38 loss at Independence CC last Saturday. Ellsworth (3-3, 1-0 Iowa Community College Athletic Conference) hosts Hutchinson CC this Saturday afternoon.


Brett Shedd, Shorter University


BRETT SHEDD — Shorter University (Soph., LS, Woodland HS). . . the Hawks’ long snapper saw playing time in a 42-14 loss at Gardner-Webb. Shorter (0-6, 0-3 Gulf South Conference) hosts North Alabama this Saturday afternoon.



SHELBY TOWNSEND, JR. — Georgia Southern University (R-Jr., DL, Woodland HS). . . saw playing time in the Eagles’ home Sun Belt Conference loss last Wednesday to Arkansas State. GSU (0-4, 0-1) hosts New Mexico State this Saturday night in Statesboro.


JAKE WALKER — Furman Universitiy (Fr., TE, Cartersville, GA, Darlington HS). . .did not have a reception but was targeted twice in the Paladins’ 41-17 win last Saturday at Chattanooga. Through six games, Walker has three catches for an 11.7 yard per catch average. Furman (3-3, 2-1 Southern Conference) hosts conference foe VMI this Saturday afternoon. The Paladins received votes and are just outside the latest FCS top 25 rankings.
