Lady Canes, Hurricanes run at Jesse Owens Classic in Alabama
The Cartersville High School cross country teams competed Saturday in a large field event at the Jesse Owens Classic at the Oakville Indian Mounds near Danville.
The event drew more than 5,000 total runners from around the Southeast in 12 divisions.
The Lady Canes placed 12th and the Canes 16th in the Silver division races. There were 35 girls teams in the division and 41 boys teams.
Clara Pinter of Pearl (MS) High School won the girls 5K Silver race with a 19:28.66. She finished one second ahead of Kately Cartwright of Hernando (MS) High School. Pearl also won the girls team event in the division by 13 points over Fort Payne (AL).
Vanna Beach led Cartersville (22:25) with a 67th place finish. The Lady Canes’ junior was followed by freshman teammate Alex Machado (22:35, 67th). Zane Bryan and Alice Terry were 91st and 92nd in 22:55, Katie Tolbert was 97th in 22:59, and Kayla Carpenter ran a 24:29 for 148th.
In the boys Silver division race, Alex Ponce of Merrol Hyde Magnet (TN) completed the 5K course in 16:33.7 for the individual victory. There were 304 runners in the division.
For Cartersville, junior Jacob Busek (18:03, 52nd) led the way followed by Maximus Florence (18:08, 61st), Bill Archer (18:37, 106th), Clay Ross (19:01, 133rd), Parker Breedlove (19:11, 139th), Harrison Banks (19:20, 153rd), Matthew Wilson (19:32, 171st).
Cartersville returns to action Thursday at Sam Smith Park in the Wire2Wire Invitational.
