Late runs lift Woodland past Cartersville
Woodland softball totaled seven runs in the fifth and sixth innings Monday night to break open a close game in a 10-4 non-region win at Cartersville.
Cartersville led 1-0 after one inning. Woodland took a 3-1 lead in the second inning and Cartersville tied the game at 3-all through four innings.
Woodland pitcher Sarah Baynard allowed only two earned runs on seven hits and two walks to pick up the complete-game pitching victory in the circle. She struck out four.
Brittney Cox had a three hit game for the Lady Cats and drove in one run. Caroline Higdon had a pair of hits that included a triple and three RBIs. Bella Carnes added two hits. Skylar Chappell had one hit. Ansley Evans and Audrey Morris each contributed one RBI.
Cartersville was led at the plate by Colbi Ballard with three hits and one RBI. Hope Short had a pair of hits. Paris Poston had one hit and drove in a run with a sacr fly. AnnaKate McElhaney added a hit.
Ballard (5 IP, 10R, 8ER, 8H, 6BB, 3K) started in the pitching circle for Cartersville and suffered the loss. Lauren McElhaney (2 IP, 0R, 0H, 0BB, 1K) worked the final two frames for the Lady Canes.
Woodland (8-13, 4-8) hosts East Paulding Tuesday at 5:55 pm and closes the regular season at Cass Wednesday at 5:55 pm.
Cartersville (8-14, 5-7) concluded the regular season and now awaits results from two Cedartown games this week to determine their playoff fate. Cedartown is 4-6 in region play with games remaining against Chapel Hill and Central-Carroll.
