Lady Colonels collect region win; Woodland edged at Villa Rica


Cass softball scored three runs in the sixth inning and three more in the seventh inning Friday night at home to catch Paulding County and send the Region 7-AAAAA game to extra innings tied 6-6.


After a scoreless eighth inning, the visiting Lady Patriots scored a run in the top of the ninth to go ahead 7-6 but Cass responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning for an 8-7 win.


Kaila Carson singled to lead off the Lady Colonels’ ninth inning in front of walks issued to Alexia Najarro and Sarah Fox.


Courtesy runner Keturah Hight scored on a wild pitch to tie the game 7-7 and Sarah Moore drove home the walk-off winning run with a grounder that scored Najarro.


It was the first region win for Cass this season.


Savannah Hilderbrand led Paulding County’s offense with two hits and one RBI. Six other Lady Patriots had one hit each.


Carson led the Cass offense with three hits. Fox, Taylor Gibson, and Holli Elrod had the other Cass hits. Mae Mae McIntyre, Haley Owens, and Moore had one RBI each.


Owens (1 IP, 5R, 2ER, 3H) started in the circle for Cass and was lifted after one inning. Gibson (8 IP, 2R, 0ER, 5H, 2BB, 9K) picked up the pitching win.


With the loss, Paulding County fell to 4-13 overall and 3-9 in region games.


Cass (5-19, 1-11) has two home region games remaining. The Lady Colonels play Carrollton Tuesday and Woodland Wednesday. Both games are 5:55 p.m. starts.




VILLA RICA 6, WOODLAND 5


Woodland had the tying run on third in the top of the seventh Friday night at Villa Rica, but could not get the big hit in a 6-5 Region 7-AAAAA loss.


The Lady Cats led 3-1 after one inning and pushed their lead to 4-1 in the third inning.


Villa Rica scored single runs in the fourth and fifth inning to narrow the margin to 4-3 and then scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to lead 6-4.


Abbey Gamble (7 IP, 5R, 2ER, 7H, 4BB, 6K) picked up the pitching win and had three hits including a home run and two RBIs to lead Villa Rica.


Baylee Walls and Izzy Rohr finished with two hits each for the hosts.


Woodland pitcher Sarah Baynard (6 IP, 6R, 2ER, 9H, 4BB, 2K) was tagged with the loss.


Caroline Higdon and Brittany Cox (RBI) had two hits each for the Lady Cats. Jordan Duck had two RBIs with a double. Skylar Chappel (RBI) and Audrey Morris had the other Woodland hits.


Villa Rica improved to 16-7 overall and 9-4 in Region 7-AAAAA.


Woodland (7-13, 4-8) plays a non-region game at Cartersville Monday at 5:30 p.m. before playing region opponents East Paulding and Cass on Tuesday and Wednesday. The Lady Cats host East Paulding and travel to Cass. Both region games are 5:55 p.m. starts.
