Adairsville wins Komatsu Bartow County Championship
The Adairsville softball team defeated Cass 10-2 in five innings Saturday afternoon to capture the 2017 Komatsu Bartow County Softball Championship Tournament at the Stars Complex — home of the Georgia Highlands College Chargers.
Adairsville defeated Woodland 6-2 Friday in one semifinal and Cass knocked off Cartersville 8-3 in the other semifinal to set up Saturday’s championship game.
The Lady Tigers started quickly with first inning, solo home runs by Havyn Isaac and Emily Collum and were never challenged on the scoreboard by the Lady Colonels.
Adairsville added three more runs in the second inning to take a 5-0 lead and Tigers’ pitcher Loren Harris (5 IP, 2ER, 3H, 2BB, 3K) really didn’t need much more for her complete-game win.
Sierra Tanner finished with two hits and three RBIs for Adairsville. Isaac and Sadye Johnson both had two hits and one RBI. Emily Collum (RBI), Alexa Varner (2 RBIs), Cortni Jacobs (RBI), and Victoria O’Neal had the other Lady Tigers’ hits.
Haley Owens (2.1 IP, 5R, 2ER, 4H, 2BB, 1K) started in the circle for Cass and was touched for the loss. Taylor Gibson (1.2 IP, 5ER, 6H, 0BB, 3K) also pitched for Cass.
Sarah Moore, Mae Mae McIntyre, and Gibson had one hit each for the Lady Colonels.
Adairsville (9-4) is scheduled for a three-game Region 6-AAA homestand this week. The Lady Tigers host Calhoun Tuesday at 5:30 pm, Ringgold Wednesday at 5:55 pm, and Bremen Thursday at 5:30 pm.
Cass (2-11) plays region road games this week at Kell on Wednesday at 5:30 pm and plays at Woodland Thursday at 7 pm.
CARTERSVILLE COMEBACK EDGES WOODLAND
In the third place game, Cartersville scored three unanswered runs across the fifth and sixth innings to edge Woodland in come-from-behind fashion, 6-5.
Allie Jackson of the Lady Canes, who finished with three hits, three RBIs, and scored two runs, had a two-RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the sixth for the game’s deciding runs.
Colbi Ballard (3 IP, 0R, 1H, 1BB, 6K) picked up the pitching victory in relief of Cartersville starting pitcher Lauren McElhaney (4 IP, 5ER, 3H, 4BB, 4K).
Paris Poston had a three-hit game for the Canes and drove in a run.
Hope Short, Ballard (RBI), Presley Edwards, Kalli Scheff, and Cio Seigler added hits in the Lady Canes’ 11-hit attack.
Sarah Baynard (3 IP, 3R, 1ER, 7H, 0BB, 2K) entered in relief and suffered the pitching loss for Woodland. Madi Bentley (3 IP, 3R, 2ER, 4H, 1BB, 3K) was the Woodland starter in the pitching circle.
Morgan Bailey finished with two hits and one RBI for the Lady Cats. Brittney Cox and Kendyl Hardin both had one hit and one RBI. Madgie Robinson drove in one Woodland run.
Cartersville improved to 4-7 overall with their win. Woodland now has a 5-6 mark.
The Lady Canes host Cedartown Tuesday at 5:30 pm before traveling to Central-Carroll Thursday at 5:30 pm and Troup on Saturday for a noon start. All three games are Region 5-AAAA contests.
Woodland plays at Carrollton Wednesday at 5:30 pm, hosts Cass on Thursday at 7 pm, and travels to Valdosta Friday and Saturday to play in the Lowndes Vikette Inviational.
