Athletes Beyond Bartow: College football, soccer seasons get underway

FOOTBALL

Trase Fezzia — Ellsworth CC (Fr., DB, Cartersville HS). . . broke up a pair of pass plays last Thursday in his first-ever collegiate appearance. The Panthers (0-1) fell to Garden City CC 31-7. Ellsworth plays at Coffeyville CC Saturday.

Emmanuel Jones (photo) — Colorado State University (Fr., LB, Woodland HS). . . in his first college game, Jones had one solo tackle as the Rams topped Oregon State 58-27. CSU (1-0) plays Colorado Friday night at Sports Authority Field at Mile High in Denver.

Brandon Wade — Ellsworth CC (Fr., DL, Cartersville HS). . . starting at defensive end in his college debut Wade did not make the stats list as Ellsworth fell to Garden City CC 31-7. The Panthers (0-1) play at Coffeyville CC Saturday.

SOCCER

Katelynn Harbeke — Life University (Jr., Cass HS) . . . scored a goal vs. South Carolina-Beaufort on August 22 and recorded a hat trick and an assist Saturday against Ave Maria. In five starts this season, she has 16 shots, 12 shots on goal, four goals, and a pair of assists. The Running Eagles (2-2) host Faulkner University Tuesday, September 5.

Katie Lawhorn — Life University (Fr., Adairsville HS). . . has started two games for the Running Eagles and has taken one shot. She has averaged 39 minutes in LIfe’s first four games. The Running Eagles (2-2) host Faulkner University Tuesday, September 5.

Cody West — Duquesne University (Grad Student, Cass HS). . . A multi-year starter for the Dukes, West has been a leader as one of the team’s top defenders. He had two assists in a pre-season scrimmage win over Seton Hill. Duquesne (1-1) lost to St. Francis 4-2 and defeated Bloomburg 5-0. The Dukes host Marshall Thursday night.
