Cartersville Little League (12U) remains unbeaten at state tournament
The Cartersville Little League Baseball (12U) all-stars trailed Athens Little League 5-0 early Tuesday night at the Georgia Little League State Tournament in Peachtree City, but rallied for six runs in the bottom of the second and added two more in the fifth on their way to an 8-6 victory.
Cartersville managed its eight runs on only three hits, taking advantage of eight walks and a pair of Athens miscues.
Chris Roper hit a three-run homer for Cartersville in the second inning to give the locals a 6-5 lead. Tyler Shelton and Drake Carver had RBI singles in the inning. A pair of hit batsmen and three walks also contributed to Cartersville’s big inning.
After Athens tied the game 6-6 in the third inning, Cartersville pitcher Jakiyon Porter (3.2 IP, 0R, 0H, 2BB, 6K) kept them off the scoreboard the remainder of the night. He allowed only a pair of walks over the final three and two-thirds innings and fanned six.
Cartersville took its final lead with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Three walks, an error, and two passed balls accounted for the Cartersville runs.
Harrison Childers (1.2 IP, 5R, 2ER, 0BB, 1K) started on the mound for Cartersville and Trip Bradley (0.2 IP, 1ER, 0H, 3BB, 1K) recorded the final out of the second inning and the first out of the third.
Cartersville, now 2-0 in the double-elimination tournament, plays Tuesday’s Northern (Columbus)/Peachtree City winner on Thursday at 8pm at Peachtree City Little League.
