Lady Canes win 5th straight region title, boys to also host state playoffs
The Cartersville High School girls tennis team won a region championship for the fifth straight season Wednesday with a 4-0 win over Central-Carrollton in the Region 5AAAA finals.
The Cartersville boys team fell in the region finals to LaGrange, but will also host a state playoff match next week as a No. 2 seed.
In the girls’ title match, Emma McCary won at Line 1 singles 6-4, 6-3, but each of the other matches were extended to a third set.
Kenly King pulled out her Line 2 singles match as did the doubles teams of Taylor Riddle/Jordan Ross and Allyson Ireland/Lydia Wiedetz.
The Cartersville boys team fell 2-3 in their championship match. LaGrange also won the regular season match with the Canes, 4-1. Evan Slocum and Will Allen won singles matches for the Hurricanes Wednesday to account for the Hurricanes two points.
In next week’s state tournament, the Lady Canes will host the No. 4 seed out of Region 7AAAA. The Canes will entertain the No. 3 seed from that same region.
