Canes stay unbeaten in Rawlings tourney

The Cartersville baseball team defeated Dunwoody Friday afternoon 8-1 at LakePoint in Emerson for the Canes’ second pool game victory of the 2017 Rawlings Select Tournament.

Cartersville posted six runs in the third inning to break open a scoreless game.

The first occurred without benefit of a hit. Three walks and an error led to the initial run.

Jacob Fowler then gave the Canes a 2-0 lead with an RBI single. Spencer Dickey lined a two-RBI double for a 4-0 advantage before another Dunwoody error and a balk resulted in a 6-0 difference.

Canes’ starting pitcher, Mason Barnett, kept the Wildcats off the board most of the afternoon. He had a one-hit shutout going into the sixth inning, but after two were out in the sixth he hit two batters and walked two for Dunwoody’s only run of the game.

Barnett (photo left) earned the pitching win and combined with Jacob Fowler for a one-hitter. Barnett walked three and struck out three. Fowler tossed a shutout seventh inning and fanned one.

Back-to-back doubles by Anthony Seigler and Devin Warner, followed by a two-out RBI single by Barnett plated the Hurricanes final two runs in the bottom of the sixth to account for the 8-1 final score.

Spencer Dickey (photo above, right) finished with three hits, including a double and a pair of RBIs. Fowler had two hits and one RBI. Seigler, Warner, Barnett, and Preston Welchel had one hit each.

Kelton Southard had the only Dunwoody hit. Wildcats’ starting pitcher, Charlie Sheets, was tagged with the loss. He allowed six runs, three earned on four hits and six walks in three and two-thirds innings.

With the loss, Dunwoody is now 9-13 for the season.

Cartersville (17-6) defeated Walnut Grove Thursday in their opening pool game of the tournament. The Hurricanes’ play Pepperell in the tournament semifinals Friday evening. The championship game is slated for Saturday at 2pm at LakePoint.
