Warner's walk-off defeats Cedartown
Devin Warner delivered a walk-off double Tuesday night in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Cartersville Purple Hurricanes defeated Cedartown 4-3 at Richard Bell Field in a battle of two Top Five teams in Class AAAA.
Spencer Dickey singled to open the final inning, but was forced out at second on a bunt attempt by Mason Barnett. Preston Welchel followed with a successful sacrifice that advanced pinch runner Kolby Adams into scoring position. After Anthony Seigler walked, Warner delivered the game-winning, two out hit.
Cedartown scored three runs after two outs in top of the fifth to knot the game. The Canes had taken a 3-0 lead with three runs in the bottom of the third.
Barnett (0.2 IP, 0R, 0H, 1BB, 1K) picked up the pitching victory in relief of starter Seigler (4.2 IP, 3ER, 6H, 4BB, 8K) and Spencer Dickey (1.2 IP, 0R, 0H, 2BB).
Cedartown’s Casey Newsome (6.2 IP, 4ER, 5H, 4BB, 3K) suffered the loss on the mound for the Bulldogs.
Cartersville got on the scoreboard first with a pair of walks to Welchel and Seigler followed by a wild pitch. Warner then flied out to centerfield for a sac fly. One batter later, J.P. Martin homered to left field and the Canes held a 3-0 advantage.
Cedartown tied the game in the fifth on a pair of walks and three singles. Newsome’s single drove in two runs.
Barnett was 2-for-3 at the plate for the Hurricanes. Dickey, Noah Daniel, and Martin’s homer were the only other Cartersville hits. Warner finished with two RBIs.
Dalton Prince and Newsome (2 RBIs) both had two hits for Cedartown.
The Bulldogs slipped to 12-3 overall and 2-2 in Region 5AAAA.
Cartersville (13-3, 3-0) plays at LaGrange Thursday at 5:30pm and will host Troup County Friday at 5:55pm.
