Canes edge Sandy Creek with Seigler's shutout
Anthony Seigler tossed a complete-game, two-hit, shutout and struck out 12 to lead the Cartersville Purple Hurricanes to a 1-0 win over Sandy Creek Thursday in th Canes’ Region 5AAAA opener.
Seigler needed only 83 pitches and threw 70 percent of his pitches for strikes while only walking one batter in the contest.
Ira Clifton was the tough-luck losing pitcher for the Patriots. He scattered eight hits and did not walk a batter while striking out five after giving up the the game’s only run in the first inning.
Devin Warner lined a single into right field to drive home the ultimate game winning run in the bottom of the first. His hit scored Seigler, who had tripled to lead off the inning. Seigler finished 3-for-3 at the plate on the day.
Jake Gooch had two hits for Cartersville. J.P. Martin and Preston Welchel added one hit each.
Sandy Creek slipped to 11-5 overall and 1-1 in region games with the loss.
Cartersville (10-3, 1-0) plays at Chapel Hill Friday at 5:55pm in another Region 5AAAA matchup. The Canes are also scheduled to play Rome Saturday at State Mutual Stadium in Rome.
