Cass and Woodland split; Cartersville sweeps Sprayberry
Cass and Woodland split a pair of Region 7AAAAA soccer games Friday night with the Lady Colonels taking the girls matchup while the Wildcats were able to shutout Cass in the boys' game.
Meanwhile, the Cartersville girls and boys teams swept Sprayberry.
CASS GIRLS 5, WOODLAND 3
The Cass girls soccer team defeated region foe, and county rival Woodland Friday night 5-3.
Cass led 4-1 at halftime.
Logan Vermaas, Brittney Ochoa, Briana Ochoa, and Kelsey Rivera scored the first half goals for the Lady Colonels. Brittney Ochoa and Stephanie Robledo had first half assists.
Vermaas added a second half goal for Cass on an assist by Lupita Pineda.
Brianna Bullock earned the win in net for the Lady Colonels.
Grace Webb scored in the first half for Woodland. Kaitlin Winnenberg scored twice in the second half for the Lady Cats.
Woodland falls to 0-7-1 with the loss and hosts Rome Tuesday.
The Lady Colonels (3-5) will entertain East Paulding on Tuesday.
WOODLAND BOYS 2, CASS 0
Following a scoreless but exciting first half, Woodland’s Miguel Hernandez gave Woodland a 1-0 lead with approximately 30 minutes remaining and Servando Aguirre added an insurance goal 12 minutes later.
Cesar Pineda assisted on both Wildcats' goals.
Cass remains winless on the season at 0-9.
Woodland improves to 4-3-1 and 2-2 in region play.
Cass entertains East Paulding and Woodland hosts Rome on Tuesday.
CARTERSVILLE GIRLS 2, SPRAYBERRY 1
Chloe Davis scored a pair of goals Friday night as the Lady Canes defeated Class 6A Sprayberry 2-1.
Davis scored in the game’s 4th minute and again in the 9th minute for Cartersville’s early lead that held up. The opening tally was unassisted. Claire Choate was credited with an assist on the second goal.
Sprayberry scored in the first three minutes of the second half to cut the lead in half, but the Lady Canes’ defense was up to the challenge the remainder of the night.
Merritt Vance, Livy Romero, Grace Cochran, and Chloe Williams were credited with outstanding defensive play for Cartersville in front of quality saves by keeper Abby Robinson.
“The win was a huge win for us against a quality team,” said Lady Canes head coach Chad Murray. “The girls were fired up. I think it showed them a glimpse of what they can accomplish with hard work and a focused team effort. I certainly was proud of the effort and intensity we played with.”
CARTERSVILLE BOYS 6, SPRAYBERRY 1
The Cartersville boys soccer team defeated Sprayberry Friday night, 6-1.
James Chege put the Canes on the scoreboard in the 3rd minute. Barrett Hester found the net in the 12th minute, and Jake Hacker scored three minutes later as Cartersville took an early 3-0 advantage.
Grant Farmer, Jonathan Cruz, and Pedro Robledo had assists on the first half goals.
Sprayberry scored in the 25th minute to narrow the Cartersville lead to 3-1 at halftime.
In the second half, Cesar Abeja scored in the 43rd minute and the 65th minute on a free kick. Pedro Ghanem also scored a Canes goal in the 44th minute. Pedro Robledo had an assist.
Sprayberry is now 1-7 on the season.
Cartersville (5-1-1) plays at Central-Carroll Tuesday and at Chapel Hill on Friday.
