This week's Athletes Beyond Bartow update covers a wide variety of sports including collegiate wrestling, tennis, basketball, softball, and baseball.
At the professional level, two locals -- Adrian Rodgers and Emmanuel Holloway continue their work in European leagues while former Canes' pitcher, Sam Howard, has started Spring Training impressively with the MLB Colorado Rockies.

WRESTLING
HUNTER QUINN — Emmanuel College (Freshman, Cass HS). . . placed third in the 141-pound weight class at the NCWA SEC Conference Tournament to help Emmanuel to a first place finish over University of Central Florida and University of Florida. Quinn was one of eleven Lions’ wrestlers to advance to the NCWA national tournament in Allen, TX March 9-11.
SAMMY ROSARIO — Cumberland University (Senior, Cass HS). . . 133-pound division, third-ranked Rosario lost a 12-0 decision to fourth-ranked Jake Sinkovics from the University of the Cumberlands (KY) in the national fifth place match at the NAIA Wrestling National Championships in Topeka, KS Saturday. The former Cass Colonels wrestler had wins over Cartland Allen of Graceland University (IA) and Blaysen Terukina (Menlo College, CA) before losing to Sinkovics 6-3 in the championship bracket quarterfinals. In the wrestlebacks, Rosario registered a major decision against Bacone College’s Brandon Vela and defeated Midland University’s Isaiha Johnson before dropping a 7-4 decision to David Berg of Midland University (NE).
TENNIS
PEYTON GOLLHOFER — Ball State University (Sophomore, Cartersville resident, Laurel Springs Academy). . . partnered with teammate Carmen Blanco to win a Line 3 doubles match, 6-0, in the Cardinals’ 6-1 win over Belmont Saturday in Nashville, TN. The Ball State women (9-2) play at Western Kentucky Monday.
COLLEGE BASKETBALL
SYDNEY BOYD — Brewton-Parker College (Sophomore, G, Woodland HS). . . scored two points and had two assists as the Lady Barons were knocked out of the Southern States Athletic Conference tournament in Montgomery by Middle Georgia State, 65-50. The opening round loss ended Brewton-Parker’s season with a 9-16 record. Boyd averaged 4.25 points and 2.30 rebounds in 20 games played. She also had 10 assists and 11 steals.
A.J. MOSBY — Alcorn State University (Junior, PG/SG, Cartersville HS). . . scored five points at Texas Southern and 19 points at Prairie View last Thursday and Saturday as the Braves lost a pair of conference road games. Mosby also grabbed seven rebounds, had four assists, a block and a steal in those two games. ASU (16-13, 13-5 Southwest Athletic Conference) opens the SWAC Championship Tournament Tuesday at home against Mississippi Valley State. The tournament continues Friday and Saturday in Houston, TX.
COREY TOBIN — Reinhardt University (Junior, G, Cartersville HS). . . Tobin and the Eagles open play in the NAIA National Championship Tournament Wednesday in Point Lookout, Missouri. Reinhardt (22-9) is a 7-seed and faces 7th-ranked and 2nd-seeded Indiana University East (26-7) in the first round. Tobin has appeared in 25 games, starting 14 for the Eagles. He is averaging 7.8 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 1.2 assists per game.
EUROPEAN PRO BASKETBALL
EMMANUEL HOLLOWAY — UU Korihait Uusikaupunki - Finnish Pro League (G, Illinois State; Woodland HS) (photo left). . . scored 15 points with two rebounds and three assists as UU Korihate snapped a 17-game losing streak and picked up a fifth win of the season March 1. He then added 10 points with three rebounds and three assists in a 92-73 loss at KTP Basketball last Friday. UU Korihait (5-28) hosts BC Nokia Saturday.
ADRIAN RODGERS — Malbas Oresund - Swedish Pro League (G, Cartersville native, Centennial HS; Southern University). . . scored 18 points with six rebounds and four assists in a 95-80 loss at Jamtland last Friday. Malbas Oresund (2-25) hosts UMEA Basketball Tuesday.
SOFTBALL
TAYLOR BRASELTON — Reinhardt University (Senior, SS, Woodland HS)(photo right) . . .went 5-for-13 with two doubles in three games this past weekend — a doubleheader split at Point University and a home win over St. Thomas University (FL). She scored four runs and drove in one run. Braselton is batting .500 through 15 games in 2017 and has an .871 fielding percentage in 70 defensive chances. Reinhardt (13-7 overall, 1-1 Appalachian Athletic Conference) hosts Milligan College (TN) in a doubleheader Monday before traveling to Titusville, FL for ten games at the Space Coast Spring Classic Wednesday through Saturday.

She drew a walk at Point in a pinch hitting role and was 1-for-3 with one RBI, two runs scored and a walk vs. St. Thomas. Reinhardt (13-7 overall, 1-1 Appalachian Athletic Conference) hosts Milligan College (TN) in a doubleheader Monday before traveling to Titusville, FL for ten games at the Space Coast Spring Classic Wednesday through Saturday.

The Panthers (2-10, 1-3 USA South Athletic Conference) host Covenant College in a doubleheader Wednesday and travels to Maryville College (TN) for a doubleheader Saturday.
CASSIDY HOWREN — Reinhardt University (Junior, C, Adairsville HS) (photo right). . . was 4-for-10 this past weekend in three games against Point University and St. Thomas University (FL). She also coaxed one walk and had a sacrifice hit. Howren is batting .235 for the season. LAUREN WOMACK — Georgia Highlands College (Sophomore, SS, Cass HS). . . went 1-for-9, stole two bases and scored three runs in four games for the Chargers last week. Womack is hitting .271 this season through 25 games. Georgia Highlands (22-5, 6-2 Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association) defeated conference rivals Andrew College and ABAC last Friday and Saturday. The Chargers play at South Georgia CC Friday and at East Georgia CC this Friday and Saturday. Both matchups are GCAA doubleheaders.
BASEBALL
ELLIOTT ANDERSON — Auburn University (Freshman, LHP, Cartersville HS). . . allowed a hit, a walk, hit a batter, and recorded one strikeout in an appearance Friday during the Tigers’ 8-0 win over Lipscomb at Plainsman Park. Auburn (9-3) will host South Alabama Tuesday, Kennesaw State Wednesday, and Presbyterian College for a three-game series Friday through Sunday.
BRANDON ETHERIDGE — Limestone College (Junior, OF, Cass HS) (photo left). . . was 4-for–11 this past weekend in a three-game Conference Carolinas series at Pfeiffer University (NC). The Saints were swept by the host Falcons. Limestone (12-9, 2-4) will host Erskine College Friday and Saturday in a three-game conference series.
CARRINGTON EVANS — Augusta University (Freshman, OF, Cartersville HS). . . was 0-for-2 with a walk in a 9-8, 17-inning loss at home to Newberry last Wednesday. Evans is hitting .364 in six appearances and 11 at bats this season. The Jaguars (6-10 overall, 2-4 Peach Belt Conference) lost three of four games last week. Augusta hosts Saginaw Valley University Tuesday and has a three-game, home conference series with UNC-Pembroke Friday through Sunday.
MICHAEL GOSS — UNC-Greensboro (Senior, 1B, Cartersville HS). . . went 2-for-8 with a double and two RBIs. He also scored two runs scored and had one sacrifice in a three game, home series with Maryland-Eastern Shore last weekend. In 11 starts, Goss is batting .278 with eight RBIs and two homers. UNCG (5-6) hosts Elon Tuesday and a four-game series with Princeton Friday through Sunday.
BRADLEY HOOD — Georgia Highlands College (Sophomore, RHP, Cass HS). . . earned a save Saturday in a two-inning appearance against Macomb CC (Mich) where he did not allow a hit, but walked one and struck out four. He also worked one-inning with a strikeout February 28 facing Roane State CC. Hood has now appeared in three games with a 1.80 ERA in five innings. The Chargers (12-8) have won six straight and have a busy week with a doubleheader against Vincennes University Wednesday, a single game with Indian Hills CC (IA) Friday, a doubleheader vs. USC-Lancaster Saturday, and a single game vs. Triton CC (IL) on Sunday. All six games this week are at LakePoint Sports in Emerson.
CODY LEDBETTER — Young Harris College (Freshman, LHP, Cass HS). . . made his first 2017 appearance last Thursday yielding three earned runs on four hits in a Mountain Lions’ 12-5 home win over Cedarville Unversity. He recorded one strikeout. YHC (4-11, 0-3) will play Southern Indiana Wednesday at LakePoint in Emerson before traveling to Columbus State this weekend for a three-game Peach Belt Conference series.
SEAN McDURMOTT — Cleveland State CC (Sophomore, 1B, Adairsville HS). . . McDurmott continued his torrid start this past week by going 7-for-16 with two walks as the Cougars went 4-1 for the week defeating Piedmont College JV, Roane State CC twice, and Tusculum College JV. In 14 games, the Mercer University commit is batting .451 with two homers and 13 RBIs. Cleveland State CC (11-3, 2-1 TCCAA) hosts conference rival Motlow State CC for three games Friday and Saturday.
JO JO UNDERWOOD — UNC-Greensboro (Senior, 3B, Cartersville HS). . . made one start in this past weekend’s series with Maryland-Eastern Shore and made the most of it. He was 1-for-3 with two walks, scored three runs with two RBIs. UNCG (5-6) hosts Elon Tuesday and a four-game series with Princeton Friday through Sunday.
TYLER WASHINGTON — Young Harris College (Junior, OF, Adairsville HS). . . started for the Mountain Lions last Thursday in a 12-5 win at home over Cedarville University (OH). Washington went 3-for-4 with a double, three RBIs, and scored three runs as a starter in left field. He now has a .370 batting average in six starts and 11 game appearances. YHC (4-11, 0-3) will play Southern Indiana Wednesday at LakePoint in Emerson before traveling to Columbus State this weekend for a three-game Peach Belt Conference series.
MLB
Fourth year pro and Cartersville native, Sam Howard, tossed another pair of shutout innings last Saturday for the MLB Colorado Rockies in a Cactus League, spring training, 4-3 loss to the Seattle Mariners.
Howard, a non-roster invitee to the major league Rockies spring training camp, made his second appearance in relief for Colorado this spring. He had a previous two inning outing against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Last Saturday, Howard pitched the 5th and 6th innings against the Mariners.
In the fifth, he got a fly out from Tyler O’Neil, a line out to left field from Tyler Smith, and struck out Leonys Martin.
In the sixth inning, Howard got Jean Segura to ground out to third. Robinson Cano popped up to the shortstop, and he struck out Nelson Cruz.
In the two appearances combined this spring, the former Cartersville Hurricane has pitched four innings, allowed only one hit, no walks, and has struck out three. Opponents have a batting average against him of .077.
Colorado is 5-4 in Cactus League games this spring. Seattle improved to 6-2.
Howard spent the second half of the 2016 season with the Hartford Yard Goats in the Class AA Eastern League.
