This week’s roundup of Athletes Beyond Bartow includes college wrestling, tennis, basketball, softball, and baseball.
Division I baseball gets started next week. The college basketball conference tournaments are just around the corner and former Cartersville Hurricanes’ southpaw Sam Howard is an invitee for spring training with the Colorado Rockies. Those Cactus League games begin February 25.
This week’s update for athletes with local ties to Cartersville and Bartow County.
BASKETBALL
EMMANUEL HOLLOWAY — UU Korihait Uusikaupunki — Finnish Pro League (Guard, Illinois State; Woodland HS). . . scored seven points with three assists and three rebounds in a loss to Lapua last Wednesday before scoring 14 points with five assists in a loss to Kouvot on Saturday. Holloway is averaging 12.6 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.8 assists a game. UU Korihait looks to snap a 14-game losing streak Wednesday when it hosts Helsinki.
A.J. MOSBY — Alcorn State University (Junior, G, Cartersville HS). . . (photo left) scored 13 points with six rebounds in an 88-77 win at Mississippi Valley State Saturday, then scored a season-high 22 points with five rebounds, two steals, and one assist in a 70-58 win at Arkansas-Pine Bluff that gives the Braves eight straight wins. He’s averaging 9.4 points, 4.7 rebounds and a team-high 2.8 assists a game, while also leading the Braves in steals. ASU (13-11, 10-3 Southwestern Athletic Conference) hosts another conference game Saturday with Alabama State and hosts SWAC-foe Alabama A&M on Monday.
ADRIAN RODGERS — Malbas Oresund Malmo — Swedish Pro League (G, Centennial HS, Southern University, Cartersville resident) . . . scored eight points last week in an 81-77 upset win over first place Lulea. It was only the second win of the year for Malbas who lost again later in the week 88-57 to Boras. Rodgers scored 21 points in the loss that improved his 15.1 points per game average. He is also averaging four rebounds and two assists. Malbas (2-21) plays at KFUM Nassjo Friday and at Sodertalje February 21.
COREY TOBIN — Reinhardt University (Junior, G, Cartersville HS). . . converted on 4-of-8 3-pointers for 12 points in the Eagles’ 87-76 win over Truett-McConnell Saturday. He also collected five rebounds. For the season, Tobin is averaging 7.7 points and 3.5 rebounds a game. RU (20-6, 13-5 Appalachian Athletic Conference) hosts Union College (KY) Wednesday before closing out the regular season at Bluefield College (VA) Saturday afternoon.
CARROD WATSON — University North Georgia (R-Freshman, F/C, Woodland HS). . . saw 9 minutes of playing time of the bench Monday in a 66-63 win at Georgia College. The game was decided on a half court buzzer beater by freshman Denzell Hosch. Watson is averaging just under two points and two rebounds in 10 appearances this season for the Nighthawks. UNG (14-11, 10-6 Peach Belt Conference) hosts University of Montevallo Wednesday and Columbus State Saturday.
HAKEEM WINTERS — Point University (Sophomore, F, Cartersville HS). . . scored nine points and recorded three rebounds in a 89-76 home loss to Bryan last Wednesday. He then scored four points and grabbed five rebounds in an 84-60 home loss to Milligan College last Saturday. He is averaging 7.5 points and 4.6 rebounds per game for the year. The Skyhawks (2-25, 1-17 Appalachian Athletic Conference) play at Truett-McConnell University Wednesday and at 2nd-ranked Union College (KY) Saturday.
BASEBALL
BRANDON ETHERIDGE — Limestone College (Junior, OF/P, Cass HS). . . Tossed 2 and 1/3 shutout innings Sunday to pick up a pitching victory in a 7-5 home win over Davis & Elkins College. He allowed only one hit and struck out three. Etheridge was 0-for-8 at the plate with one RBI in games against Saint Anselm and Carson-Newman last week. Limestone (6-2) plays at Lenoir-Rhyne Tuesday evening and will host Gannon and LIU Post this weekend in the Limestone Classic.
CARRINGTON EVANS — Augusta University (Freshman, OF, Cartersville HS). . . (photo left) went 3-for-3 with a walk, RBI, and three runs scored last Wednesday in a 10-7 home loss to Erskine College. Augusta (2-4) hosts Paine College Wednesday and will play a three-game series with Anderson University (SC) this weekend with a doubleheader in Anderson Saturday and a home game Sunday at the Augusta Greenjackets’ Lake Olmstead Stadium.
TY FOWLER — Tennessee Wesleyan College (Senior, RHP, Cartersville HS). . . tossed a scoreless inning, struck out one and yielded one hit in an 11-4 victory over Auburn-Montgomery last Saturday. TWC (4-2) plays a doubleheader Tuesday at Talladega College and will host weekend games with Brescia University and Indiana Tech Friday and Saturday.
BRADLEY HOOD — Georgia Highlands College (Sophomore, RHP, Cass HS). . . allowed a run on four hits in a two-inning relief appearance during an 8-2 loss to Walters State CC Sunday. GHC (2-4) hosts Bryant & Stratton (VA) Tuesday and Wednesday, then hosts Lincoln Trail CC in a three-game set Friday and Saturday.
SEAN McDERMOTT — Cleveland State CC (Sophomore, INF, Adairsville HS). . . (photo right) went 9-for-13 in a pair of games at Gordon State and a home game against Columbia State CC. The Mercer University commit had a double in each game, scored five runs, and totaled five RBIs. The Cougars (2-1) face Bryant & Stratton College (VA) Wednesday at LakePoint in Emerson and will host Vincennes University for a three-game series Friday and Saturday back in Cleveland, TN.
TYLER WASHINGTON — Young Harris College (Junior, OF, Adairsville HS). . .made a pinch hit appearance and played center field in two games last week against King University. He went 1-for-3 in those games and scored a run. He then started in centerfield for the third game of the three-game series and went 0-for-4. YHC (2-4) plays at Brevard College (NC) Tuesday and will host a three-game series with Auburn-Montgomery Saturday and Sunday.
CHAZ WILSON — Columbus State University (Senior, RHP, Cass HS). . . made a pair of one inning appearances last week for the 18th-ranked Cougars. He worked a 1-2-3 eighth inning with the game knotted 4-4 against 15th-ranked University of West Georgia. CSU eventually lost in 12 innings. He then allowed a run on two hits and a hit batsman in a seventh inning appearance at Lynn University (FL). Columbus State (3-4) travels to Wingate University (NC) for a three-game series Friday through Sunday.
SOFTBALL
TAYLOR BRASELTON — Reinhardt University (Senior, OF, Woodland HS). . . (photo right) stole three bases and scored two of Reinhardt’s four runs in the opening game of a home doubleheader sweep of Hiwassee College last Saturday. She added one hit in the second game. The 16th-ranked Lady Eagles (2-0) travel to Beaufort, SC Thursday through Saturday where they will play six games at the USCB Challenge.
SYDNEY FLOWERS — Reinhardt University (Junior, INF, Woodland HS). . . delivered an RBI single for the Lady Eagles’ fourth run in a 4-1 season opening win over visiting Hiwassee College last Saturday. She also had a single in the second game of the doubleheader with Hiwassee. The 16th-ranked Lady Eagles (2-0) travel to Beaufort, SC Thursday through Saturday where they will play six games at the USCB Challenge.
TAYLOR WAITS — Brewton-Parker College (Freshman, Cartersville HS). . .has played in two of the Lady Baron’s six games. She has started one and is 1-for-2 with a single in her only plate appearances. Brewton-Parker hosts a doubleheader with Thomas University (GA) February 21.
TAYLOR WEEKS — Reinhardt University (Senior, INF, Adairsville HS) . . . had a hit in the second game of the Lady Eagles’ season-opening doubleheader sweep of Hiwassee College last Saturday. 16th-ranked Reinhardt (2-0) makes the trip to Beaufort, SC Thursday through Saturday where they will play six games at the USCB Challenge.
LAUREN WOMACK — Georgia Highlands College (Sophomore, INF, Cass HS). . . went 3-for-10 with a pair of walks, two RBIs, and two runs scored as the Chargers went 4-0 hosting the Borders Battle at Hamilton Crossing Park last weekend. Georgia Highlands (9-3) will play road games this weekend at Gulf Coast State CC (FL), at the Sun Chief Classic hosted by Faulkner State CC (AL), and at Enterprise State CC (AL)
TENNIS
PEYTON GOLLHOFER — Ball State University (Sophomore, Laurel Springs Academy, Cartersville resident). . . won the first set, but lost her No. 1 line singles match in a BSU 6-1 home loss to Cincinnati last Saturday. She also lost in a No. 2 line doubles match with partner Audrey Berger. The Lady Cardinals (5-2) host Evansville Saturday and IUPUI on Sunday.
WRESTLING
EVAN COLE — Cumberland University (Junior, Cartersville HS). . . lost by technical fall to 14th-ranked Hunter Bell last Wednesday in a 27-16 home team loss to University of the Cumberlands (KY). The Phoenix, ranked 14th in NAIA, travel to Bowling Green, KY Saturday for the NAIA East Region Qualifier.
