Lady Canes, Lady Cats secure key region wins


The Cartersville Lady Canes and the Woodland Lady Cats both picked up key region wins Friday night.


The Excel Christian Academy and Adairsville girls came up short.

 

CARTERSVILLE GIRLS 58, TROUP COUNTY 51


The Cartersville girls basketball team trailed early — including 19-11 after one quarter — but rallied to win Friday night at Troup County, 58-51, in a Region 5AAAA battle.


Cartersville outscored the Lady Tigers 15-6 in the second quarter to take a 26-25 lead at halftime, but they trailed 41-38 after three periods.


Monica Matuba and Madison McKinney combined for 15 of the Lady Canes’ 20 fourth quarter points as Cartersville came-from-behind for a region win.


McKinney finished with 15 and Motuba scored 14 to lead Cartersville. Camilla Rodriquez followed with 12 points. Amya Davis contributed nine; DeAsia Jefferson and Addie Smith added two points each; while Kimora McClinic and India Reid chipped in one point apiece.


Troup County (14-10 overall, 7-5 Region 5AAAA) got 17 points from Jedda Madden and 14 from Kiva Spence.


The Lady Canes (9-15, 3-9) host Central-Carrollton Saturday at 5pm as those two teams wrap up their region and regular season slates. A win by Cartersville would earn the 5-seed heading into the Region 5AAAA tournament.





WOODLAND GIRLS 32, HIRAM 31


Lexie Robinson scored 12 points and Carli Clymer 10 as the Lady Cats won their third game and completed a season sweep of the Lady Hornets at Hiram Friday night.


Hiram fell to 5-19 overall and 4-11 in Region 7AAAAA.


Woodland heads to the region tournament with a 3-20 overall slate and finished 3-13 in the Region 7AAAAA regular season.





TRION GIRLS 55, EXCEL CHRISTIAN ACADEMY 49


Brighton McCollum scored 23 points, but the Lady Eagles lost at Trion 55-49.


Trion improved to 6-18 overall and 5-9 in Region 6A.


Excel (10-9, 6-7) hosts Christian Heritage Saturday at 3:30pm.




ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 72, COAHULLA CREEK 55


The Adairsville girls defeated Coahulla Creek Friday 72-55 in Chatsworth.


The Lady Tigers led at each quarter stop: 13-12, 29-27, and 51-42.


Nakiyah Washington led all scorers with 23 points. Emily Collum and Havyn Isaac followed with 13 and 12 points, respectively. Josie Summerville chipped in with nine. Zay Harris scored eight points. Taylor Greene finishe with three points. Chlow Powll and Latya Printup scored two points apiece.


Lily Snyder led Coahulla Creek with 12 points. Madeline Kalafut and Allie Young added eight points each for the Lady Colts (4-19, 2-11).


Adairsville (8-17, 2-10) opens Region 6AAA tournament play Monday at Calhoun against North Murray at 4pm.
