Woodland wins Area 7AAAAA wrestling title; Cass runner-up; Cartersville 4th at Area 5AAAA; Tigers qu
The Woodland wrestling team won the Area 7AAAAA traditional championship Saturday at Carrollton High School with a 213.5 point total, surpassing runner-up Cass (196) and third place Carrollton (167).
Woodland had eleven of twelve wrestler qualify for next weekend's Class AAAAA Sectionals, while Cass also had eleven individuals to qualify for the state sectionals.
Kyle Gollhofer (113-pound weight class), Jesus Montero (120), Vinnie Rosati (126), Dawson Wood (132), and Cody Cochran (152) won Area 7AAAAA titles Saturday for Woodland in their respective weight classes.
Cass' Jaylen Callahan (145), Houston Jones (170), Tripp Breeden (220), and Seven Richards (285) were also Area 7AAAAA champions.
Earning Area runner-up honors for Woodland were: Gavin Nix (106), Kyle Veley (138) Jacob Frye (170), and Hunter Hardin (220).
Finishing as Area runner-up for Cass were: Ben Mills (113), Alex Depasquale (120), Kendall Arnold (152), and Chance Scrutchins (182).
Woodland's remaining sectional qualifiers are: Kristian Fisher (160, 4th), Kurtis Feanny (285, 4th), and Rodney Thompson (145, 5th).
The remaining sectional qualifers for Cass are: Rett Moore (160, 3rd), Reed Davis (195, 3rd), and Nick Mills (106, 4th).
Woodland and Cass will advance to compete this Friday and Saturday (February 3 and 4) at the Class AAAAA state sectional tournament hosted by Buford High School.
At the Area 5AAAA Championship, Cartersville placed fourth as a team and qualified eleven wrestlers for next weekend's state sectionals at Woodward Academy. Nine are already in the tournament field. Two Canes' wrestlers qualified as alternates.
Jonathan De La Cruz led the charge for the Hurricanes by winning the 220-pound division bracket. Robby Earick (132) and Carlos Aborresco (170) reached their respective Area championship bouts.

Adairsville had three individual wrestlers advance to the Class AAA State Sectionals next Saturday at Bremen. Sophomore Nic Jackson finished second in the 170-pound class at the Area 3AAA meet Saturday. Junior Bryce Burgess took third place in the 160-pound division, and senior Kyle Cain was a fourth place qualifer for sectionals in the 152-pound group.
